Do Scents change with the Seasons?

What are the right scents to wear for each season – and do they actually change on your skin during the year, or is it only how you perceive them…?

Well, have you noticed your favourite fragrance can smell different sometimes?

The fact is, all aromatic molecules need an amount of heat (usually from your skin) to work. The temperature of your skin and the air dramatically alter the rate at which the molecules evaporate and dissipate, and this then changes the way the perfume smells – to you, and others around you.

One of the things to consider when choosing a fragrance is the weather – both when you’re trying it, and when you want to actually be wearing it, because it DOES change how you perceive a perfume, and how it performs on your skin.

Hot weather intensifies the fragrance notes and makes them ‘bloom’ on the skin more quickly – when molecules heat up, they evaporate more quickly.

Colder weather slows down the evaporation rate (so top and heart notes last much longer) and you might find your scent doesn’t project as much in the winter.

But sometimes it’s not even about how they last on your skin – it’s the feeling particular fragrances evoke. So, just as you wouldn’t wear a heavy jumper in the summer, wearing a fragrance that makes you think of cashmere or velvet and roaring log fires on a sweltering day can just feel… wrong.

Having said all that – there are many cultures and people who actively prefer to ‘lean into the heat’, and wear perfumes which swathe the skin in billowing woods, sizzling spices and sticky resins at the height of summer, or perhaps choose cooler, Cologne style scents in winter; and that’s fine, too. It all comes down to personal taste, of course, but it’s true that because of temperature and humidity, scents can certainly feel right for one season and completely wrong for another.

What makes a ‘summer’ fragrance? (Plus: get scent samples, here!)

Are all scents ‘seasonal”, and what makes a fragrance truly fit for summer? We’ll answer your questions about summer scents (and when to wear a fragrance), plus give you the low down on the perfect perfumes we’re flying high with this season; and telling you how to get your hands on samples of all the scents we mention, in the Summer Box…

Temperature matters:

Firstly, with the ever-present queries about if you should wear one type of scent in the summer or save others for colder weather. Basically put, all aromatic molecules need an amount of heat (usually from your skin) to work. The temperature of your skin and the air dramatically alter the rate at which the molecules evaporate and dissipate, and this then changes the way the perfume smells – to you, and others around you.

Personal preference:

Because of this, many of us prefer to wear lighter, brighter fragrances in warmer months and swap for something cosier as the temperature drops, but is it really true you should only wear (for example) citrus / fresh fragrances in summer? Not necessarily! Don’t forget that these days we have all sort of brilliant synthetic notes that are mixed with those fresher ones, and which massively lengthen their staying power on your skin. Plus, perfume ‘rules’ of the old days have really relaxed (along with the strict ideas people used to have about gendering scents).

Think about ‘texture’:

So, while it definitely comes down to personal preference, there’s no doubt that the majority of perfume lovers still prefer to switch up the more swaddling fragrances that almost feel opaque and heavier in ‘texture’ and character, for something with a bit more space about it, and that feels more sheer – as though you can see the light through it – in warmer weather. These scents tend to have a texture that feels breezier, a scent that seems to waft and float in the air around you, rather than sit on your skin. It all depends on the molecules – citrus and fresher notes evaporate more quickly, so they radiate around you, sparkling like the rays of sunshine on a cresting wave.

What to Wear? – Seasonal Scents for Sunny but Autumnal

We happen to be experiencing something of a late surge of summer currently, but it’s definitely tinged with the turning of the seasons. Sana Jardin Incense Water

A sheer scent that marries a velvety yet gauzy rose to crystalline patchouli heart with the piquancy of pimento berries and raspberry leaf on a pellucid sandalwood base. Like wearing an echo of a comforting dream, you really can sense the rose water flowing through the composition, and tendrils of incense floating on the breeze. Floral Street Electric Rhubarb

Inspired by happy summer days in the garden, sipping Prosecco with your nearest and dearest, this immediately joyous scent was created in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society. Effervescent bubbliness abounds with sparkling rhubarb popping the cork on a frothy gush of gardenia, exotic frangipani and radiant jasmine Sambac. Already we’re in the sunshine and partying – tinkling laughter and clinking glasses the backdrop to a happy-making fragrance that’ll have you wanting to kick off your shoes and dance barefoot.

Maison Crivelli Oud Maracuja

The oudh-averse among you need not run away, for this truly is oudh as you’ve never smelled it. A tart medley of passion fruit, blackcurrant (plus a dash of saffron) lift woods and resins out of the darkness. It washes skin with waves of freshness at first, before a sizzle of the saffron heats up the woodiness of the base. Never overwhelming, always wearable, this house is doing extraordinary things. Coffee is a ‘gourmand’ note not always seen in scents, but used so perfectly here as the antidote to any dreary days (and an olfactory alarm call when you’re feeling a bit sluggish!) There’s a creamy comfort to wearing this, as the aromatic coffee note is swirled within vanilla and touch of magnolia for a floral flourish – think of it as a dreamy, creamy latte in fine fragrance form. What are the right scents to wear for each season – and do they actually change on your skin during the year, or is it only how you perceive them…?

Well, have you noticed your favourite fragrance can smell different sometimes?

Hot weather intensifies the fragrance notes and makes them ‘bloom’ on the skin more quickly – when molecules heat up, they evaporate more quickly.

Colder weather slows down the evaporation rate (so top and heart notes last much longer) and you might find your scent doesn’t project as much in the winter.
