The new Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal Pour Homme scent certainly packs a punch – in more ways than one. First, there’s the fresh breeze of herbacious sage, with handfuls of ripe mandarin (skin, flesh, pulp, seeds – the whole fruit squeezed into the bottle). Then, toasty tonka bean leans in closer for an addictive, skin-like caress, with the vibrant woodiness of vetiver vibrating sensually in the base. Of course, the house of Jean Paul Gaultier is known for the utterly mesmirising and quirkily glam advertising campaigns, and the one for Scandal Pour Homme certainly thinks outside the box(ing ring)…

‘Versace Dylan Blue is a highly distinctive fougere with a fragrant woody aroma based on the unique olfactory properties of precious natural ingredients and the latest generation of molecules. ‘For a thoroughly modern take on the Mediterranean theme DSquared2 Wood For Him, opens with the freshness of Calabrian bergamot, mandarin and lemon from Sicily, enriched with ginger, violet and cardamom. Ambrox and a modern blend of white woods intensify the elegance of vetiver, resulting in a scent that is strong, sturdy, unique and inimitable!’
‘Our fathers are our heroes and Versace Eros is the stuff of legend! So take a journey to ancient Greece with the intense and vibrant freshness of mint leaves, lemon zest and green apple. Enveloping notes of tonka bean,

Fragrance du Bois have generously commissioned the creation of a VERY special bottle of Oud Bleu Intense, to be raffled off to raise funds for the NHS Heroes at University Hospital Lewisham.
To be in with a chance of winning, all you need to do need to make a minimum donation of £5 – which is more than worth your while, seeing as the bottle of perfume is worth a staggering £5000!
Watch the film, below, to see just how staggeringly beautiful this spoecial bottle is…
Explaining why they wanted to do something to help, Fragrance du Bois say: ‘We have been thinking long and hard how we can help support our healthcare heroes globally during the Pandemic . There is no single way to do this to support all, so we are choosing Hospitals and organisations that have been highlighted to us, to date we have supported Commune Di Milano and raised €1600 which isn’t enough and we plan to do more .
Having seen the daily insights provided by @dralexgeorge we had to select one Hospital to support and chose University Hospital Lewisham where he works as an A and E Doctor as we have seen with Dr Alex’s help on social media the reality all hospitals are facing daily with Covid 19 alongside all the other hospital emergencies.
If we can get maximum support for this campaign we will choose other Hospitals globally to support using Go Fund Me which doesn’t allow us to support the whole Healthcare system we have to choose one at a time.’
Oud Bleu Intense is one of their very best-selling fragrances, and we can certainly understand why. An intoxicating blend of salty marine air, forest-y earthiness and addictively complex truffled notes, many have swooned at first sniff, and we definitely get those special perfume palpitations when it’s on our skin. The standout is the pure, sustainable oudh oil – the signature ingredient of the house – softly wrapped in cool spices of cardamom and nutmeg, freshened with mandarin, enriched with a trio of myrrh and then sensually wafting forth a lightly smoked trail of frankincense… Heavenly!
Fragrance du Bois Oud Bleu Intense Parfum – from £39 for 3ml (in a serum ‘pen’), to £495 for 100ml parfum. (Or, of course, £5,000 for the limited edition bottle!) Buy it at:jovoyparis.uk
We wish everyone who enters the charity raffle the best of luck, and even if you’re not lucky enough to win it, you’ll be helping a fantastic cause…

National Fragrance Day is on March 21st every year, and we want you to all join in by putting your best face – and fragrance – forward for a #smellfie, to have fun and be in with a chance to WIN amazing perfume prizes...
Six years ago, at The Perfume Society we came up with the idea of the #smellfie – a selfie with a scent you love – to highlight this special day.
We will be going ahead with marking our annual #Smellfie Day on National Fragrance Day, Saturday 21st March 2020 – and we invite you to get involved.
Jo Fairley, co-founder of The Perfume Society, says:
‘We believe that we all need beauty in our lives right now – and beyond that, fragrance has the power to lift our spirits or even make us feel like we’re wearing a suit of armour.
To that end, we’re inviting followers and fragrant friends to post a photo of themselves with a favourite fragrance that unfailingly makes you feel more cheerful, or gives you a feeling of courage, that you can cope with anything. We all need to tap into fragrance’s magic power to do that, right now.
We send our best wishes to the fragrant community and will be doing all that we can to support perfume houses large and small through this and other activities, in a positive way that is nevertheless sensitive to the unprecedented times we’re living in.’
When we invented the #smellfie and posted our first pictures, little did we know it would lead to many thousands of fragrance fans all over the world sharing their photos, with celebrities (including Little Mix, Katy Perry, Charlotte Tilbury, and Richard E. Grant) joining in and, last year, the combined photos people posted getting over 41,000 likes!
Take a look at some previous winning #smellfie entiries to get an idea of how creative people can get with them! But don’t worry if you’re not up for painting yourself, getting in to costume or going full-out – some of our very favourites are simply people who post a picture holding their favourite fragrance and telling us *why* they love it so much. It’s such a feeling of the fragrance community coming together and truly celebrating scent.
This year we want you to help us make it even bigger, so here’s how you can get involved.
How to post your #smellfie on SATURDAY MARCH 21st, 2020
After all the images are in, we’ll be choosing our top 5 favourites: the most inventive, the most artistic, the ones with the best captions! Every winner will receive a subscription to The Perfume Society’s VIP Club. The overall winner will receive a subscription and a fragrance bundle worth £300!
If winners are overseas, they will receive an International Subscription to The Scented Letter, our online magazine dedicated to scent, so an entire year’s worth of fragrant reading.
We’ll be re-posting and sharing some of our faves during the day, and will announce our overall winners here – wishing you all the very best of luck, and remember to have fun with it: this is a celebration of how fragrance can make us feel…
So, which fragrance will you choose, how will you pose and how many of your fragrant friends can you get to join in this year? We can’t WAIT to see!
Lastly, I really feel this is a great way to make use of social media during these strange and troubling times. With people staying at home and perhaps feeling very alone – let’s show how wonderful our fragrance community is, all over the world…
Multi-award winning natural perfumer Marina Barcenilla is something of a fragrant wonder. In 2011 she launched The Perfume Garden, a small artisan perfumery based in Glastonbury. With a collection of six oil-based perfumes – alongside a selection of body oils, bath salts and sugar scrubs, originally blended to order – she has since seen her passion turn into an industry-acclaimed fragrance house.
Marina’s vision was for a return to more traditional ways of creating perfume, but infused with the elegance, passion and lightness of touch that only the finest ingredients and the poetic soul of an artistic perfumer can produce…
As founder and perfumer, she wanted to be involved in every aspect of the perfume creation process, from sourcing rare and precious aromatic essences from around the world to blending fragrances by hand in her own perfume studio, based in Glastonbury.
Marina is a dear friend to The Perfume Society, and we have so enjoyed watching her blossom! Very generously, Marina has granted our VIP club members 20% off any 30ml bottle of fragrance purchased online during August. Go here to claim your discount code.
Not only that, but Marina is giving one lucky person a the opportunity to WIN a signed bottle of her beautiful Spring Rain perfume!

We were thrilled to hear that Ruth Mastenbroek‘s Firedance perfume has been selected as a finalist for this year’s prestigious Fragrance Foundation Awards. And Ruth very kindly popped in to sign a full-size bottle of Firedance for one of our lucky V.I.P’s to win!
Scroll down for the entry form, below – closing date is 31st May 2018…
‘A story of celebration… rejoicing in each moment of contentment in life. In Firedance, Ruth presents a scorching, modern interpretation of the classic rose perfume, as exotic leather dances in surprise harmony with the main character – smouldering Damask rose. Set against a warming backdrop of oudh and patchouli, a shining amber note radiates from the skin in this memorably intimate and sexy perfume.’
Do not be scared of that ‘oudh’ word, either – this is a stunningly sophisticated interpretation, and no wonder it’s up for an award. We know you’ll adore it.
Terms & Conditions: No cash alternative to the prizes will be offered. The prizes are not transferable. Prizes are subject to availability and we reserve the right to substitute any prize with another of equivalent value without giving notice. Closing date for entry will be 31/05/2018. Easter egg hunts are all very well, in theory, but the idyllic image of rosy-cheeked children bounding through meadows is often replaced with the reality of dreary, drizzly or downright awful weather. And this year, we have more snow predicted for some parts of the UK. Oh joy!
Fear not: we’ve set up a fragrantly-themed ‘hunt’ right here, to indulge in from the comfort of your own home.
THREE lucky winners will receive Green & Black’s Easter eggs. Feast your eyes, above (we’re drooling already!)
Deliciously intense, the milk chocolate egg is joined by two large milk chocolate bars – milk chocolate with butterscotch, and milk chocolate with Anglesey sea salt.
To share or keep for yourself? We rather think the latter, don’t you?
How to hunt: Simply read the clues and set off in search for all the colourful eggs pictured below (FIVE in total) scattered across our website, then drop us an email [email protected]telling us the location of each egg.
Closing date: Monday 2nd April 2018
Fragrant clues to egg hiding places around our website:
1 – The newest scents to get your nose around, all boxed up…
2 – In-house for Hermès, which perfumer says she’d love to create a perfume for Eve?
3 – The era that Estée Lauder’s bath oil changed everything?
4 – When this couturier recently passed away, President Emmanuel Macron declared, ‘France has lost a master…’
5 – All a-bloom right now, this heady flower smells like burying your nose in springtime itself!
We wish you all a very happy Easter, and good luck!
Terms & Conditions: No cash alternative to the prizes will be offered. The prizes are not transferable. The fourth annual Art and Olfaction Awards were announced on May 6, and with a heady melange of strong candidates in the running as finalists, we were so thrilled and proud to see that BeauFort London won for their outstanding fragrance Fathom V in the Independent Category. In fact, though the awards ceremony were held in Berlin this year, we’re pretty sure you could have heard us whooping all the way from the UK!
Based in Los Angeles, the The Art and Olfaction Awards are designed to ‘…raise interest and awareness for independent and artisan perfumers – and experimental practitioners with scent – from all countries.’ More than simple recognition for the immense hours of hard work undertaken by these small and proudly independent fragrance houses, the award founders explain that, ‘by shining a spotlight on perfumery’s most outstanding creators, we hope to help generate support for independent practices in perfumery as a whole.’
We have long known and celebrated the importance of niche fragrance houses and the great influence they now carry for the designer brands and the trickle-down effect they have for the mainstream market. Those mega brands now showcasing “unisex” scents in paired-down bottles across the range, florals for men and unusual note combinations? All these trends began long ago in the niche world – think of them as catwalk couture influencing eventual high street styles.
Of course, before BeauFort London had even officially launched, we were championing the house based on love at first sniff of their historically inspired yet ultra contemporary scents, and you can read our interview with founder Leo Crabtree, here.
Read our page dedicated to the BeauFort London to find out more about their inspirations and our thoughts on some of the fragrances themselves, but for those of you who haven’t yet tried the (now award-winning!) Fathom V – get ready to have your senses beguiled. It’s one of the most incredible shared fragrances we’ve smelled for some time – a humongously green, tousled bouquet of flowers tossed into roiling waves as guns fire a salute, sinking in to salty, opaque waters cloaking hidden treasures in the shdowy depths… And you can try it for yourself at home in our Precious Perfumes Discovery Box.
We would like to extend our congratulations to all the finalists in this hotly contested year, and are busily reading up on some of the more artisinal houses we’ve not yet had the pleasure of exploring. So really, think of the entire list of finalists as your must-sniff guide to all that’s uber-cool right now in the perfume world.
And for 2017, the winners are…

Cinematically inclined scent-o-philes are encouraged to indulge their creativity with a plunge in to the world of short films… As Clara Molloy, founder of MEMO Paris perfumes breezed through town, today, to launch Eau de Memo (watch this space!), she told us all about a rather exciting competition that we know many of our artistic readership would love to get involved MEMO Paris perfumes have established a weekly competition of poetic films – merely between 20 and 30 seconds in length, yet expressing timeless stories far deeper than the actual time frame may suggest. Through MEMO’s dedicated Cinéhaïku website, film directors both amateur and professional are invited to express themselves through a simple exercise: adapt the rules of haiku to an audiovisual format.
So what, exactly, is a Haiku? Well, Jack Kerouac put it as ‘A sentence that’s short and sweet with a sudden jump of thought in it, is a kind of haiku,’ though if you want a more in-depth description, there are countless websites dedicated to the art and history of this poetic medium. But how to translate this in to a short film? The rules to follow are on the Cinéhaiku competition page under how to participate, but basically it’s a 20-30 second snippet of something that ‘captures a lived moment.’
Each week, from March 6 to June 29, 2017, a winner will be chosen by Cinéhaïku members and awarded a $500 prize. The prize-winning films are then automatically entered into the Cinéhaïku Festival to compete for the annual prize. The overall winner of the year’s best Cinéhaïku will be invited to France to receive a quite incredible $10,000 prize awarded by a professional jury selected from the world of art, film and literature, and the winner will also be given a separate, dedicated space in the festival. Cinéhaïku say: ‘The annual Cinéhaïku festival will showcase all of the weekly winning films at a temporary exhibition held from July 7 to 21, 2017 throughout the town of Gordes, in the Luberon region of southern France. The Cinéhaïkus will be broadcast on screens along an aesthetic trail, providing festival-goers with a true moment of poetry suspended in time.’
Our film would just have to be about perfume and the sense of smell, of course – but what would you haiku…?
