Francis Kurkdjian: Capturing Light in a Bottle

Francis Kurkdjian is a master of capturing light in fragrance, a gift that radiates through every creation bearing his name. Now the in-house perfumer at Dior, while very much continuing to helm his own Maison Francis Kurkdjian, he balances a disciplined, methodical approach with a poetic sensibility.

Let’s explore the luminosity…

Rising as early as 5 a.m., Kurkdjian begins his day with remarkable efficiency and clarity. ‘People generally link creativity to romanticism, like a free spirit with your hair blowing in the wind, but it doesn’t work that way; you need a frame within which to work,’ he observes. This structured mindset, combined with a minimalist aesthetic and a meticulously organised workspace, allows him to distil moments of light and emotion into scent with extraordinary precision.

Within his Maison, Kurkdjian’s fragrances are singularly suffused with radiance, each bottle seeming to glow softly from within. Indeed, many of his compositions are conceived as luminous expressions of time and mood – from the delicate freshness of dawn to the warm embrace of twilight. ‘I have a creative routine that I apply for most of my projects,’ he explains. ‘As an early bird I am at the office around 7:30 – 8 the latest. It’s the best time for me to work on a scent, to smell the trials I have made previously.’

This dedication to routine and focus is reflected in the clarity and elegance of his perfumes, which unfold like carefully composed symphonies of light as they warm on the skin. Now, which of these light-filled fragrances have you tried, we wonder…?

Petit Matin

‘Rise at dawn, escape into the delicious freshness of an early morning in Paris and rediscover a taste for beauty.’

Petit Matin sparkles like the first light of day, evoking the quiet streets and deserted arcades of Paris bathed in dawn’s gentle glow. The fragrance opens with the vibrant zest of litsea cubeba and orange blossom, their citrus brightness immediately awakening the senses. The floral softness of lavandin and hawthorn adds a delicate, dewy freshness, conjuring the sensation of morning air kissed by light. Beneath this radiant veil, a labyrinth of musky notes weaves subtle warmth without diminishing the scent’s airy clarity. Petit Matin is a bright, shimmering eau de parfum that invites wearers to dive into the excitement and promise of a new day.

Grand Soir

‘Before the City’s lights turn on, a range of dazzling colors from honey to a captivating amber paint the sky.’

Now we are bathed in the sumptuous glow of twilight, when daylight’s last golden embers mingle with the approaching night. Rich and enveloping, it opens with a deep accord of cistus labdanum, lavandin, and cinnamon leaf-a tapestry of resinous warmth and gentle spice. The heart and base unfold into an amber-vanilla accord enriched with sweet balsamic benzoin facets, creating an olfactory glow that is both vibrant and sensuous. Grand Soir wraps the wearer in a soft caress of evening light, exuding a magnetic allure that is simply irresistible.

The fragrance radiates a glowing warmth, reminiscent of candlelight filtering through sun-dappled rooms. Gentle Fluidity Silver

‘An ascending, ultra-fresh, aromatic note, similar to a “gin frappé” effect, balanced by the dry, slightly balmy, spicy notes of nutmeg.’

Shimmering with crystalline freshness, it’s hard to believe Kurkdjian conjured such a differing character from the exact same notes as Gold. Yet here juniper berries burst forth with invigorating piquancy, evoking the cool fizz of a gin-based cocktail. Nutmeg and amber woods add a dry, balmy warmth that grounds the composition without dulling its airy brilliance. The musks and vanilla base reveal facets ranging from sweet and enveloping to clean and powerful, creating a scent that is both vibrant and comforting. Silver’s luminous trail is like a delicate lace shawl spun from dew-speckled spiderwebs-ethereal, shimmering, and utterly captivating.

Aqua Vitae

‘The idea of sensuality, pulsing with brightness and warmth, inspired by the island of Formentera.’

Embodying the radiant balance of sun and shade, inspired by Kurkdjian’s summer escapes to the island of Formentera. It opens with sparkling Sicilian mandarin and Calabrian lemon, their citrus brightness tempered by the soft, luminous floralcy of sweet mock orange and lily of the valley. The base of guaiac wood, vanilla, and tonka bean lends a gentle, glowing warmth that feels both fresh and sensual. Aqua Vitae captures the magnetic attraction between two people-a luminous dance of light and shadow, cool air and sun-kissed skin-distilled into a fragrance that is at once energising and tender.

Ylang-ylang lends sunny brightness, while vanilla and white musks wrap the composition in a soft, airy sillage. It seems to hug the contours of body and personality with a glowing sensuousness.

Sunset Scents – Perfume’s Magic Hour

Sunset bottled – what image does that bring to mind for you? As the sun dips low and the sky is set ablaze with gold, rose, and indigo, the world enters that most magical of hours: sunset.

Sunset is a time of transformation, when the day’s heat softens, shadows lengthen, and the air itself seems to shimmer with possibility. For perfumers, sunset is an invitation to play with contrasts and nuance-to capture the warmth that lingers, the hush that falls, and the sense of anticipation that dusk brings.

To evoke sunset in a fragrance is to distil the interplay of light and shadow, warmth and coolness, vibrancy and calm. The perfumer’s palette here is rich and complex: radiant citrus and sun-warmed florals give way to velvety woods, spices, and musks. These are scents that wrap around you like a silk scarf at twilight, inviting you to linger in the moment between day and night.

Sunset fragrances often feel both energising and soothing, imbued with a sense of mystery and sensuality-the promise of adventures yet to come.

Having explored Sunrise Scents, and Scents for Sunny Afternoons, this time, as our series on the qualities of light in fragrance draws towards evening, we explore three scents that bottle the olfactory enchantment of sunset…

Juliette Has a Gun Magnolia Bliss

“A scent of Magnolia floated in the air almost suspending time…”

Magnolia Bliss is the golden hour bottled: the memory of a bucolic summer, flower crowns and bare feet, the sky streaked with sherbet colours as the sun melts into the horizon. The fragrance opens with the effervescent sparkle of bergamot, as fresh and bright as the last rays of sunlight. At its heart, magnolia essence unfurls, creamy and luminous, mingling with juicy mirabelle plum that hints at the sweetness of dusk. As the light fades, Ambroxan and musks emerge, soft and enveloping, like the gentle warmth that lingers on the skin after sunset. This is a scent for free spirits, for those who chase the sun and revel in the beauty of endings that are really new beginnings. Magnolia Bliss is both fresh and languid, a perfect companion for those golden, hazy evenings when the world feels full of possibility.

Ruth Mastenbroek London Dusk

“A scent for adventures from dusk till dawn.”

London Dusk captures the thrill of the city as twilight descends: the pulse of possibility, the warmth of connection, the sense of stories unfolding as the sun sets over the Thames. Exotic Australian sandalwood brings a creamy, grounding richness, while golden fig lends a lush, green sweetness that feels both comforting and mysterious. Saffron adds a thread of golden spice, glowing like city lights flickering to life, while tonka bean and amber wrap the composition in a velvety embrace. Perfectly balancing excitement and serenity, much like London itself at dusk: vibrant, layered, and full of hidden depths. London Dusk is for those who are ready to step into the night, hearts open to adventure, memories waiting to be made.

Lalique Soleil Lunar

“An enchanting dance of light and shadows…”

Soleil Lunar is dusk as a celestial ballet, where the sun and moon perform their eternal dance and the world is awash in chiaroscuro. The fragrance opens with the zesty sparkle of mandarin and the radiant heat of pink pepper, their brightness softened by the lush sweetness of magnolia. At its heart, heliotrope and ambrette add a powdery, ethereal warmth, while the intoxicating “lady of the night” flower (night-blooming jasmine) brings a narcotic, nocturnal beauty. As the scent deepens, vanilla and spices lend a golden glow, while ambery woods, crystal moss, and grey amber evoke the mineral coolness of nightfall. Soleil Lunar is a study in contrasts: radiant yet mysterious, warm yet mineral, a fragrance that lingers like the last light on the horizon and the first shimmer of stars.

So, in an evocation of sunset, the light may fade, but the magic remains. Sunset scents mark that transition of the hush before night, the glow that lingers, the sense of anticipation in the air.

Whether you’re drawn to the bohemian radiance of Magnolia Bliss, the cosmopolitan warmth of London Dusk, or the celestial elegance of Soleil Lunar, each fragrance offers a moment of magic, a memory of light suspended in time.

As our journey through the day’s light draws to a close, we are reminded that every sunset is both an ending and a beginning. In a single spritz, we can hold onto that golden hour, letting its beauty warm us long after the sun has slipped below the horizon. And how beautiful is that?
