Perfume Pairings: winter mood matching

Shall we do something positive to match (or counterbalance) our mood with fragrance right now?

Because quite frankly, we’re a bit fed up of these seemingly endless last days of January and the still-gloomy visage of February, when it feels like all cheer has faded, leaving us with nothing but grey skies, chilly winds, and a distinct lack of motivation.

But fear not, fragrance lovers! We are here to rescue you from the depths of winter despair in fragrant form…

Matching mood to fragrancel

Let’s start with those days when you’re feeling particularly gloomy, shall we? You know the ones – when even getting out of bed seems like a Herculean task. For these moments, might we suggest Adscenture Cosmic Purple? (£60 for 30ml eau de parfum) This galactic scent is like a mood-enhancing shot of espresso for your senses. The tangy rhubarb and zesty lemon will give you that much-needed mood jolt, while the bitter coffee note serves as a reminder that yes, you do indeed need to caffeinate yourself. As you slowly come to life, the spicy pimento and rose petals will transport you far away from your rain-soaked reality. Who needs a holiday when you can smell like you’re on an intergalactic adventure?

Innocent from ARgENTUM - The Perfume Society

For those days when you’re feeling a bit more optimistic – perhaps you’ve poetically spotted a lone daffodil bravely poking through the frost – reach for ARgENTUM Innocent (£228 for 20ml eau de parfum). The minty herbs and tropical basil will remind you that yes, warmth and greenery do still exist somewhere in the world. The green apple note might make you feel like you’re frolicking in an orchard rather than trudging through slush. And if anyone gives you grief for being too chipper in the face of winter’s gloom, just tell them you’re embracing your inner ‘archetype’ and moving through life with grace and humility. That’ll confuse them long enough for you to make your escape.

Now, for those cosy nights in when you’re trying to convince yourself that winter isn’t so bad after all, 4160 Tuesdays Amberama (£85 for 50ml eau de parfum). is your perfect companion. The soft woods and smooth amber will wrap around you like a mood-soothing cashmere blanket, while the hint of raspberry adds just enough zing to keep things interesting. It’s like the olfactory equivalent of a good book and a cup of tea – comforting, familiar, but never boring.

Matching mood to fragrance

But what about those rare winter days when the sun actually makes an appearance? When you want to throw open the windows and pretend it’s spring already? That’s when you reach for EAU.MG Rubus Rose (£95 for 50ml eau de parfum). The tart raspberry opening is like a breath of fresh air, while the rose and saffron heart will have you dreaming of blooming gardens. The woody base keeps your mood grounded, reminding you that yes, it is still winter, but spring isn’t too far off.

Finally, for those moments when your mood needs a bit of a confidence boost – perhaps to face that dreaded winter work presentation – Memoize London Humilitas (£177 for 100ml Extrait de Parfum) is your secret weapon. The citrusy opening will perk you up, while the floral heart combined with saffron and nutmeg will make you feel sophisticated and put-together. The rich base notes will linger, giving you an air of quiet confidence throughout the day. You’ll be radiating such an aura of humble grace that your colleagues won’t even notice you’re wearing three jumpers under your suit jacket (while pondering job-listings at other companies as you Just Cannot Even with this lot anymore, perhaps?)

Remember, dear fellow fragrance lovers, these are MUCH more than just pleasant smells – they’re your bridge to spring, your scented life-raft in the sea of winter blues.

These – and any fragrances you personally find emotionally resonant – really do have the power to uplift, energise, and transport you, carrying you through until the first proper sunny day when we can all emerge from our cocoons, blinking in the sunlight, and wondering why on earth we own so many thick socks.

Until then, spritz on, brave winter warriors. We can do this!

Recent scientific research has confirmed what many of us have long suspected: scent has a profound impact on our emotions and overall well-being. Studies have shown that certain fragrances can stimulate the production of serotonin and dopamine, our brain’s ‘feel-good’ chemicals, effectively boosting our mood and energy levels. Citrus notes, in particular, have been found to have an invigorating effect, while green, herbal scents can promote a sense of calm and clarity.

With this in mind, let’s explore a selection of fragrances that promise to bring a much-needed dose of brightness to the dreary seemingly sun free days of January. Step forth and get ready to seek out these stunning scents…

Mood-Boosting Scents to Bust through Blue Monday (& Beyond!)

So-called ‘Blue Monday’ has become something of a cultural phenomenon in the past few years, and it doesn’t really matter if you fully subscribe to the theory of it being the most difficult day to get through (on average) for many people (something to do with the amount of daylight hours, weather and the fact that January seems utterly relentless). The one thing we do know for sure – thanks to incoming scientific data – is that wearing a fragrance can truly help lift your mood and give you something to focus on when all around seems a bit blah.

Do you need to sleep better, boost your energy levels and want to feel happier (all while being beautifully scented, of course)? Here are some houses that have done the research and come up with power-packed scents that do way more than waft prettiness. Reach for these and thank us later…

Blue Monday begone! The Lifeboost® essences can be worn alone or layered with any of the eaux de parfums as an extra shot of whatever you need right now. For Relax, the mellowness of ylang-ylang melds with creamy monoi – the name means “sacred oil” in Tahiti – and the pure jasmine sambac simply sighs into the smoothness of Madagascan vanilla absolute. edeniste says: ‘Relax, feel the sun shining up above, let yourself be rocked by the sound of the waves and trees swaying in the breeze… You’re in Eden.’ And honestly, don’t we all need that feeling, currently, more than ever?

Vyrao‘s founder, Yasmin Sewell wanted to offer ‘the power of nature to amplify energy, tapping into the science of scent and its potential to activate the parts of the brain where memories and emotions are processed.’ And for The Sixth, she collaborated with Irish perfumer Meabh McCurtin who used neuroscience via ‘scientific protocols from the Science of Wellness program at International Flavors & Fragrance (IFF)’ to guide her composition. Apple, patchouli and basil radiate positivity; juniper, cedar and fir add balance, while angelica, fennel and wormwood counteract negativity.

Using IFF’s Science of Wellness computer programme for the design of Phantom, it was ‘conceived by a team of perfumers — Loc Dong, Juliette Karagueuzoglou, Dominique Ropion and Anne Flipo — who were assisted by AI and powered by neuroscience.’ Identifying key emotional benefits for the chosen ingredients, the styrallyl acetate molecule (which smells green, slightly metallic, and can be found as a component of gardenia and tuberose, among other floral notes) was used at 10x the usual dosage – as suggested by AI to increase alertness – but woven with lavender to calm and create a harmonious balance.

Paco Rabanne Phantom £60 for 50ml eau de toilette pacorabanne.com

Launching with two wellness fragrances harnessing the power of neuroscience and experienced to their fullest potential using an app – 85% of people studied wearing them achieved a more focused state, while 90% reached a more meditative state. AI generated programmes of well-being rituals use smell, calming or stimulating visuals, and sound. Red Skies is a ‘functional fragrance’ designed to re-focus and energise via vibrant orange blossom, rose, pink pepper, mandarin and neroli in the top notes, blissfully enlivening jasmine, carrot seed, sap, iris and spices in the heart, resting on a grounding, earthy base of patchouli, oakmoss, resin and cedar.

Øthers Red Skies £90 for 50ml eau de parfum + 6 months app subscription others.co

This ‘scent and sound ritual’ was partially designed by AI for those ‘desperately seeking clarity of thought’ and feeling overwhelmed by ‘a rising sense of panic.’ [That’ll be most of us, then!] Using notes of cut grass and ‘green canopies’ entwined with soothing green tea, the heart resonates incense, wild mushrooms, worn leather and spices on toasted woods, while the base sinks into spiritual Palo Santo, shady vetiver, smoked amber, Hinoki wood (prized as sacred, native to Japan, with unusual hints of citrus) and a silken sandalwood. They suggest the scent and app are used in combination to ‘create a gearshift in your day.’

Scents of calm – fragrances to unwind, uplift spirits & soothe frazzled nerves

In this time of unprecedented stress, seeking calm or a way to boost our energy levels has become more than a moment of ‘me time’ – it’s absolutely vital to our wellbeing. Focusing on your sense of smell helps control your breathing and forces your mind to concentrate on something lovely for a change.

Our sense of smell is directly linked to our limbic system, which stores memories and emotions, so using scent to uplift, unwind or soothe is a brilliant way of dealing with anxiety. Taking time to care for yourself should not be a luxury – it helps you face the day feeling revived and ready to go.

Experiencing ‘newness’ is something everyone has been severely lacking of late, but using a fragrance or scented product and fragrancing your home can transport you somewhere lovely, and change your mood in an instant.

Here’s how to ward off an anxiety attack or lift your spirits with scent:

  • Take a few minutes to spray a fragrance on a blotter or thick piece of paper.
  • Close your eyes while smelling it and see where it takes you. Don’t try to guess all the notes (it’s almost impossible unless you’re a trained perfumer!) instead, let your imagination run wild…
  • If this fragrance was a place, where would it be?
  • Think about texture as you smell. Can you say what type of fabric it would be? Heavy velvet, soft suede, crisp cotton… or something else?
  • What occasion does the scent bring to mind, and who else would be there? Allow yourself to picture the people you’re missing and imagine yourself laughing with them, hugging them again!
  • Music and fragrance are closely linked, so what type of melody would be playing, and which instruments does the scent remind you of?

It can be difficult, at first, to think of the answers, but whatever you imagine or feel is the right answer, for you. Scent is incredibly personal, so the more you practice this technique of ‘deep smelling’, the more in-tune with your sense of smell and how it connects to your memories and emotions you will be.

This is how perfumers train – often having to commit several thousand smells to memory, so they know how to recall them and can evoke particular moods in their compositions. If you’d like to try this so-soothing technique and experience some spa-like serenity, we’ve chosen some scents that help you turn your home into a Scented Retreat.

Filled with specially curated scent samples, the entire collection of La Montaña home fragrances (which perfectly echo their matching candles, if you’ve ever wanted to try those), and sensory beauty treats, including 100ml bottle of Molton Brown Bath & Shower gel – The Scented Retreat Discovery Box allows you to relax in style at home.
