Scenting Celebrity Traitors – Spoiler Free!

‘The fingerless gloves are ON as Claudia Winkleman returns to The Traitors castle with an all-star cast who are ready to play the ultimate game of deceit and betrayal…’ – The BBC

Arguably the biggest televisual ‘appointment viewing’ in years, certainly in this era of streaming shows whenever we wish and not being beholden to live TV schedules; Celebrity Traitors has debuted the first two episodes to much acclaim (and heated debate). So of course, we’re rolling up our flouncy sleeves to prepare another fragrance-matching opportunity.

There’s a whole series of these ‘scenting’ blogs for The Perfume Society, in which we take a zeitgeist cultural icon of the time and suggest scents to match literature, art, music and movies. In making connections and drawing allusions between characters we may know well and the complexities of attempting to describe an invisible smell, it’s our belief that they serve as a kind of shortcut to a truer understanding of both the perfume and whatever you’re pairing it with.

Now, holding up our promise of being SPOILER FREE (so therefore not revealing who the Traitors are, or which of the first Faithfuls have been bumped off or at risk), we’re delving in to the world of the castle’s current residents, and hoping to provide perfume suggestions that add to the atmosphere, or could help bolster the celebrity contestants during the many trials and various tribulations they will endure.

The full list of celebrities taking part this year, and competing to win money for their chosen charities, are:

Think of each of these recommendations as olfactory cloaks (for Traitors and Faithfuls alike to don). And though we’ve only pulled out a few examples here to perfume-match: which fragrances, we wonder, would YOU pair with your favourite celebrity, and why…?

[P.S: Click on the linked name of each celebrity to be whisked to their interview page on The Traitors Wiki website, BUT: BE WARNED, those pages do contain spoilers, so don’t read until you’ve caught up with the show!]

Clare Balding + Sarah Baker Riders

Obviously we plumped for a perfume that would bring a sense of familiarity and comfort for Clare, and of course (Clare often being found commentating at horse racing tracks and equestrian occasions around the country) it had to be something horsey. So what better than this hay-strewn, grassy-nuzzle from Sarah Baker’s stable? It veritably gallops out the bottle, Sunlit pastures meet leather saddles on verdant fields, ripe peaches drip luscious juices as tobacco and amber sizzle salaciously. We feel this perfume proffers nostalgic assurance alongside a serving of sass – exactly what Clare will need to stay grounded among this lot…

Stephen Fry + Penhaligon’s The Cut

Paying homage to the craftsmanship and timelessness of Savile Row tailoring is this creation by Paul Guerlain (yes, he belongs to that fabled bloodline, grandson of Jean-Paul), which we feel befits the inherent British stylishness of Stephen Fry. Fragrance mastery, then, is almost a given, here expressed with a whoosh of basil and mint (perfectly enlivening for the senses) tethered by the woodsiness of cedar and cypress (representing the rugged landscape of the Traitors castle). Fir balsam runs like a thread throughout, for a tailored creation that intelligently marries swagger and style to a wilder terroir.

Celia Imrie + FERRAGAMO Fiamma

No spoiler, as she reveals this from the get-go, but Celia says that she has ‘a naughty streak that I find hard to suppress’; so it’s possibly a match made in heaven for her to wear this particular perfume. Radiating ‘luminous energy and timeless elegance’, white pear and wisps of saffron open to a creamy gardenia and jasmine heart, encircled by swags of wild honeysuckle. Warm Ambrox, patchouli and sugared moss linger, making a sensual, woody fusion. Passionate yet refined, classic yet contemporary, just like Celia’s own character, it empowers and envelops, leaving a so-wearable sophisticated trail. Blooming iconic.

Nick Mohammed + ARgENTUM Magician

Paying tribute to transformation and a clever, quicksilver charm, Magician by ARgENTUM is a fragrant sleight-of-hand fitting Nick Mohammed’s ingenious wit (and his magician’s skills). A conjuring of orange flower and black pepper casts the first spell: brisk, surprising, and effervescent. Chilli pepper and clove bud follow with theatrical energy and pace, swirling through secret corridors. The base, drily resonant Atlas cedar, warm labdanum, benzoin and myrrh, evokes magical rituals and smoke trails. Magician is the scent Nick should wear to waft wonderment wherever he goes.

Charlotte Church + Wales Perfumery Country Gwlad

Capturing the verdant soul of her homeland, this scent evokes Charlotte Church’s lyricism, her voice as fluid as the rivers this is inspired by, her rebellious spirit rooted in the wild, rolling hills. Fresh green notes and water mingle with narcissus and petitgrain, reminiscent of dew-drenched meadows. Vetiver and woods offer grounding, something Charlotte will certainly need in her time cloistered at the castle. This is the fragrance for a woman who’s at home beneath clear skies, in chorus with song and soil, a sense of freedom perfectly balanced with deep-rootedness in the dry down.

Zen Elephant embodies wisdom and serenity, paying homage to the peaceful state of mind that balance can bring. It opens on brisk grapefruit and delicate freesia, lifted by a subtle touch of seaweed that lends an unexpected freshness. The heart blooms with cardamom, magnolia and earthy truffle, while the base lingers with the softness of cedarwood, oakmoss and ambroxan. ‘Inspired by the pursuit of balance, I experimented with ingredients that complemented each other like yin and yang, striving for a harmonious blend of floral and woody elements,’ explains Hamid Merati-Kashani, principal perfumer.

The Thursday Murder Club Film – fragrance matching the cast

With The Thursday Murder Club fans in a frenzy over the release of the movie on Netflix, we’re frothing the excitement further by exploring some possible fragrance matches for characters in the main cast.

Something we love to do at The Perfume Society is looking at cultural zeitgeist moments through the lens of scent-matching.

A mere frivolity, you may think (and goodness – let’s allow ourselves some frivolity in troubled times!) But actually, we find pairing a perfume to a character can get to the heart of a matter in double-quick time. Fragrance is so immediately evocative, transporting us to a particular time and place, and instantaneously setting a mood that might otherwise take pages of prose to explain.

With our sense of smell scientifically proven to be intricately, intimately entwined with memories and emotions, we hope you’ll agree these perfumed parallels provide insight into both the fragrances and characters alike. So, while watching The Thursday Murder Club movie, or reading the books, have a think about which personalities you warm to the most (or perhaps see elements of yourself in), and then having followed their clues, wonder what perfumes you would pick for them to wear…

Netflix says: ‘Just because you join a retirement community doesn’t mean you retire. That’s certainly true for the members of The Thursday Murder Club, who solve cold cases in their spare time at their elegant Coopers Chase retirement home in the English countryside.

Based on the bestselling novel by Richard Osman, the film follows four irrepressible retirees — Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kinsgley), and Joyce (Celia Imrie) — as their crime-solving pastime becomes a real-life whodunit when a murder lands on their doorstep.’

Helen Mirren as Elizabeth Best

About the Character

‘With her natural authority and dry wit, Elizabeth is the leader of the Thursday Murder Club. Highly intelligent, fearless, resourceful, and determined, she’s coy when it comes to the subject of her past career, which she describes only as something in “international relations.” Elizabeth certainly has some useful sources of information to call on. She’s extremely loyal to those she loves, particularly her husband, Stephen (Jonathan Pryce).’

Fragrance Match: Estée Lauder Knowing

Sophisticated, commanding, and layered with intrigue, with its rich, woody-floral composition, Knowing conveys elegance, intellect, and quiet power, wonderfully mirroring Elizabeth’s sharp wit and natural authority. Its depth has a steely backbone, and suggests hidden complexity, just as Elizabeth conceals her mysterious past. This is a scent that effortlessly embodies loyalty, strength, and understated allure, making it an ideal match for this fearless, resourceful character. Knowing, indeed…

Pierce Brosnan as Ron Ritchie

About the Character

‘Ron is the real comedian of the gang. He’s into sports and supports West Ham United Football Club. Once a militant and high-profile trade union activist — he’s dubbed “Red Ron” by the press — even in retirement he still can’t resist a fight for what he feels is right. He’s been married several times, though he’s now a widower. His real pride and joy is his son, Jason (Tom Ellis), an ex-champion boxer turned TV celebrity, who’s a regular visitor to Coopers Chase. Ron is also good friends with Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley), whom he fondly calls ‘Ibsy.’’

Fragrance Match: Jimmy Choo Man Extreme

Charismatic, and full of vitality, this scent’s fresh citrus and black pepper top notes reflect Ron’s sharp humour and lively presence. The wonderfully rugged woods and leathery undertones mirror his fiery nature as someone who’s  beliefs are strong, their personality distinctly passionate. Overall, we feel this confident, masculine energy captures Ron’s larger-than-life persona, while its underlying warmth honours his softer side, especially his pride in family and enduring friendships.

From £49 for 30ml eau de parfum thefragranceshop.co.uk

Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim Arif

About the Character

‘A confirmed bachelor, Ibrahim is a respected psychiatrist of Egyptian descent. He’s soft-spoken, kind, polite, empathetic, and cultured. He’s also highly intelligent, analytical, a little cautious sometimes, and occasionally a bit pedantic. But his insights are highly valued by his friends. His closest friend is Ron (Brosnan).’

Fragrance Match: Atkinson’s Born for Eternity

The regal fanfare of simmering saffron and pink pepper mirrors Ibrahim’s cultured, analytical nature and Egyptian heritage. Soft incense tendrils evoke his calm, empathetic wisdom, while geranium and oudh embody sophistication and depth. The dry down of supple leather, amber, and enigmatic Akigalawood conjures his warm intellect and timeless insight. We think he’d wear this as an olfactive talisman of lasting power and elegance that beautifully suits his compassionate persona.

£230 for 100ml eau de parfum selfridges.com

Celia Imrie as Joyce Meadowcroft

About the Character

‘Ex-nurse Joyce is a newcomer to Coopers Chase. “You learn about everybody through her eyes,” says Imrie. The mother of Joanna (Ingrid Oliver), a highly successful hedge fund manager,  Joyce is recently widowed. Kind, thoughtful, chatty, warm, empathetic, and eager to please — particularly when it comes to Elizabeth (Mirren) — Joyce draws people to her.’

Fragrance Match: 4160 Tuesdays Captured by Candlelight

With her love of cake and mysteries, we think Joyce would be entranced by this utterly more-ish gourmand temptation, redolent of dark sugar, dried fruits generously soaked in cognac, and toasted hazelnuts. Having been based on a short story founder and perfumer Sarah McCartney once wrote, the note of candle wax in the scent adds a flickering thrill to the perfumed proceedings, echoing Joyce’s excitement at being in the midst of a murder.

£85 for 50ml eau de parfum in the Shop

Naomi Ackie as PC Donna De Freitas

About the Character

‘PC Donna De Freitas is a young police officer who was recently transferred from the London Metropolitan Police to the quiet Kent backwater of Fairhaven. Donna is intelligent, observant, resilient, and determined; but she’s also bored, deeply frustrated, and underused. Working with the Thursday Murder Club alters the course of her career. From then on, mutual like and respect, plus a little quid pro quo, sees them unofficially collaborating — to the annoyance of her boss.’

Fragrance Match: Amouage Decision

There could be no more apt fragrance for Naomi, for with its incense-laden clarity cutting through indecision, it reveals Donna’s intelligence and resilient spirit – and her forthcoming transformation. The scent erupts with an electric crackle, like Donna’s sharp mind confronting the quiet frustrations of her new posting, settling into juniper-laced frankincense and cedar that match her analytical focus. As vanilla and myrrh warm the base, Decision’s grounding embrace reflects Donna’s unwavering resolve and the new confidence she finds in trust and teamwork.

ARgENTUM Les Parfum Infinis – discover which archetype YOU are (& why the fragrances are alcohol free)

Microbiome-friendly skincare has become a must for many as more people seek out products that support the skin barrier’s own defences ~ formulations that care for sensitive skin and which don’t cause breakouts. ‘But what about fragrance?’ asks the apothecary ‘where science meets poetry’ of ARgENTUM

ARgENTUM says: ‘Perfumes often contain ethanol as a base, a source of potential irritation due to its negative impact on the skin’s microbiome. Taking the same diligent approach as they have with their skincare for visibly healthier skin, ARgENTUM have spent years researching and formulating their own collection of fragrances. Using a patented process — known as Water Plant Emulsion® that excludes alcohol and solvents from the formulation — and selecting only the fi nest ingredients of natural origin, les parfums infinis does not disrupt the skin’s microbiome. This has been conclusively shown by a microbiome assessment study carried out by the Medical University of Lodz in Poland.

MICROBIOME ASSESSMENT RESULTS:

– The fragrances did not disturb the number of microorganisms present on the section of skin selected for testing, which was the neck. The fragrances preserve the presence of Staphylococcus epidermidis ~ a key species for healthy skin (recent research indicates that acne might be the result of an imbalance between Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis* )

– The fragrances do not disturb the natural balance of the skin microbiome. These results support the microbiome assessment study for la potion infinie, the brand’s award-winning silver face cream, which has also been proven to be microbiome-friendly.

– Supporting the friendly bacteria which make up the microbiome is key to healthy skin that’s free from blemishes and acne. As scientific research into the delicate skin microbiome continues to develop our understanding of the body’s immune defences, ARgENTUM continues to set the benchmark for luxury skincare and fragrance that supports wellbeing at a profound level.’

“The ARgENTUM philosophy is to ‘discover the beauty in balance’. This means that all our products are formulated to support the skin’s natural intelligence in retaining equilibrium. The fact that the entire collection of les parfums infinis is microbiome-friendly is an inspiring step in the right direction for luxury fragrance and for wellbeing.” – Joy Isaacs, Founder

You can find out the extraordinary full story of how (and why) ARgENTUM was founded by Joy on our page dedicated to the house, but meanwhile, we urge you to seek out the scents and see how wonderfully kind to the skin they truly are, while still being long-lasting and powerfully characterful. Now, your only quest is to discover WHICH of the fragrant archetypes YOU will feel most instinctively drawn to…

Game of Thrones: we perfume the main players – 9 scents, but no spoilers (we promise!)

Game of Thrones Season 6 has finally begun, to the nail-biting, breath-holding anticipation of the series’ legions of fans around the world. Having once been asked for our advice on scents to suit zombies by a certain TV programme’s producers (yes, really.

We’re on standby for pretty much any fragrant conundrum here at The Perfume Society HQ!) it got us pondering how we’d perfume some of the main players from another of our must-watch shows.

GOT_PerfumeInterestingly, Game of Thrones had its very own scent for a time, with the website Think Geek selling a fragrance called ‘Fire and Blood’ – though this no longer seems to be available. Whether you’re a die-hard enthusiast of the books or TV series, or simply have an interest in boldly characterful fragrances, we think these are worth exploring, instead…

Classically handsome and knows it, winsomely charming with a bracingly rugged edge, 50 years ago this was the first male fragrance by Dior and broke new ground. Described as ‘absolutely wild and resolutely sensual’, this is bergamot balanced with a mossy, floral heart for the ‘new man’ or ‘metrosexual’ – a forward-thinking guy who favours facials but still hankers after a spot of sword-fighting – before the term was coined.
