Terry de Gunzburg’s fragrant dream

Terry de Gunzburg is something of a phenomenon: the woman who invented perhaps the most iconic beauty product of our age – YSL’s Touche Eclat and then of her own fah-bu-lous By Terry make-up line – is nothing if not a perfectionist. Then, in 2012, Terry set her sights on the world of perfumery…

Driven by a quest to find her own ‘signature fragrance’, she realised there had to be more than one (welcome to our world, Terry!), for would you wear one lipstick or outfit for the rest of your life, or eat the same meal every single day? We shudder at the thought!

Explains Terry: ‘I had to progress slowly in order to learn and understand about essences that felt right, which was a humbling yet enriching experience. I had to ignore the dos and don’ts imposed by trends or a commercial brief. Free from any restrictions, I have followed my instinct to create pure, original and extravagantly high-quality fragrances.’

Combining ‘only the best ingredients with extravagant notes and artful blending’, the eponymous fragrance collection presents an elegant array of eau de parfums we’ve definitely fallen for. And can we talk about those bottles…?

Of course it’s all about the juice inside (of course!) but, well, let’s face it – we live in a visual world, and these are proper stunners. They’re reassuringly weighty and with a cap to match (how diappointing is it to see and feel a beautiful flacon only to be let down by a flimsy cap?) and solid yet with a feminine roundness. It’s the little touches like this that let you know you’re in the hands of someone who truly cares about every single aspect of the product they are, after all, putting their name on.

As for the fragrances themselves? Well of course they had to be magnificent, and when it came to creating her own line, she collaborated with Robertet’s perfumers in Grasse, giving them the freedom to use the highest quality ingredients available: tuberose absolute, ylang ylang, iris butter, rose essence… She’s said: ‘I wanted to reconnect with perfumes from the beginning of the century, like those of Guerlain and Robert Piguet — they were extravagant experiences. That’s not to say mine are dusty old fragrances. They’re contemporary — clean but not watery, opulent but not heavy.’

The exquisite quintet she launched in 2012 includes Parti Pris, a sumptuous floral that pulses around a heart of tuberose, ‘A flower that induces vertigo: in one note you can capture audacity,’ is her take. Rêve Opulent blends a duo of jasmines – Indian sambac and Egyptian – with a touch of orange blossom and ylang ylang, in an homage to gardenia. ‘The gardenia, the absolute expression of luxury, which I have dreamt of with eyes wide open,’ she explains. ‘Its opulent touch brings out a rich, floral heart.’ Lumière d’Épices ‘evokes Mediterranean jasmine: a bud ready to open, almost green and nourished with citrus fruits, spices and honey.’

Flagrant Délice offers an almost magnetic sensuality, while Ombre Mercure‘s just dreamy, in our opinion – ‘pure seduction,’ according to Terry de Gunzburg, ‘an enchanting blend of iris and violet, which plunges us into the darkness of the night.’ As the Now Smell This blog comments, ‘Ombre Mercure is velvety and rich (yet not overwhelmingly so), and its rooty-sweet iris is interwoven beautifully with the other dusky floral notes, the woodsy patchouli, and the honeyed vanilla…’ In 2013, meanwhile, the dark, smouldering Terryfic Oud, created by Jean-Michel Santorini – with its pulsing, woody base – became an instant bestseller.

Each year the collection grows – carefully thought out and chosen to enhance and expand your own fragrant wardrobe – and all under the laser-beam watch of Terry de Gunzburg, who discovered not one signature scent only, but a whole world of perfumed perfection. And we can’t wait to see what’s next…

Read more about Terry’s fascinating (and fabulous) career in beauty and fragrance on our page dedicated to Terry de Gunzburg. And then we feel it’s only right for you to get your nose on those glorious ‘fumes!

Scented gifts to give this Easter

Yes, of course we’ll be stuffing our faces with chocolate (you know us, right?) but obviously we want to have our [Simnel] cake and eat it, too. For those loved ones who prefer fragrant gifts – or perhaps as an extra treat for yourself – here’s some suggestions of adorable scented last-minute presents to give, that are just as sweet…

Mary had a little lamb – but we bet it didn’t smell as lovely as this. You can also choose a darling duckling, bunny or Easter chick, and each tin is decorated by Northamptonshire based wildlife artist Christie Lloyd. Enriched with moisturisers and shea butter, wild orchid blends top notes of iris, rose and jasmine with a fresh fruity bergamot twist on a warm base of amber, sandalwood and soft musks.

Bronnley Lamb Easter Egg Soap £3.99 for 50g

This egg contains an indulgent selection to stimulate the senses, all packed into a collectible egg-shaped tin, complete with ribbon. Almond Shower Oil [75ml], Almond Delicious Soap [50g] and Almond Delicious Hands [10ml] are perfectly sized for travelling, too.

L’Occitane Almond Beauty Easter Egg £15

Classic Lush treats nestle inside this golden egg – once cracked open you’ll discover Which Came First?, Free Rangers bath bomb and Golden Egg bath melt, plus a delicious Cream Egg ‘bubbleroon’ (which smells exactly like mint chocolate). Lush Golden Egg £20

Perfume-lovers tend to like everything to be beautifully scented – even their lips! The cult lip balm EOS comes in the cutest Easter-themed duo this year, featuring striped egg-esque pots of balm formulated with naturally conditioning oils, vitamin E and Shea Butter in kissably delicious Melon Cucumber and Coconut Milk.

EOS Easter Lip Balm Duo £12.99

Okay now we’re sorry, but this does contain a chocolate egg (oh dearie me) but it also has booze, and a beautifully scented one at that. We’ve noticed small-batch gins who focus on fragranced botanicals are incredibly popular with perfumistas (certainly here at The Perfume Society!) and many links are being forged between the gin and fragrance worlds, with rhubarb being an on-trend note for both right now. Plus, you’ll likely need a swig of this if you are planning an Easter egg hunt this weekend…

Edinburgh Gin Easter Egg & Rhubarb & Ginger Liqueur £12.50

Whatever you’re up to this Easter, we hope you have a fragrantly beautiful one!

Molton Brown set sail with Seabourn…

Molton Brown have long been offering us ways to escape the everyday humdrum with a vast selection of fabulously fragranced goodies – since 1973, in fact – but for the past fourteen years, only travellers on the luxurious ocean-line, Seabourn, have been able to experience this ultra-bespoke range. Created especially for the lavishly appointed ships, the scents were suitably inspired by the sea itself. Once exclusively the pleasure of passengers of the Seabourn, now Molton Brown are offering the range as a summer Limited Edition, giving us all the chance to get on board with their tantalisingly transportive fragrances and (as always) high quality formulas.
Molton Brown Say: ‘This year, for the first time, Molton Brown have created two completely bespoke fragrances that reflect the cruise line’s unparalleled luxurious guest experience. Usually available exclusively for Seabourn’s on-board guests, they will be offered in Molton Brown stores for a limited time. The beautiful collection is composed of ingredients inspired by Seabourn’s very own signature cruise destinations.’
The first thing you may notice are the exclusive bottles – standing apart from Molton Brown’s usual style with opaque white bottles, all featuring charming illustrations of the main fragrant ingredients, hand-drawn by the coast-based illustrator, Angela McKay. Completely sharable, the range encompasses shampoo, conditioner, bath and shower gel and a body lotion. And we couldn’t wait to get splash-happy…

Immersive Samphire & Eucalyptus Bath & Body Collection:
As always, Molton Brown use the highest quality ingredients possible, such as the carefully sourced, salty-green notes of Samphire picked from the French Atlantic Coast, and deliciously uplifting eucalyptus from Beijing. Philippe Bousseton, Master Perfumer at Takasago, reveals his inspiration for this collection as being, ‘A revitalising and very fresh aroma ideal for bathing, where samphire and marine notes are reminiscent of the sea and ultimately, of the Seabourn experience.’ Fabulously evocative, fresh without being citrus-y, we were immediately dreaming of those revitalising seaside walks that make you feel more alive.

Immersive Samphire & Eucalyptus Bath & Shower Gel £20 for 300ml

Immersive Samphire & Eucalyptus Body Lotion £25 for 300ml

Inspiring Basil & Vetiver Hair Care Collection:
Here, Master Perfumer of Fragrance Resources, Heidrun Harder, used herbaceous basil from Vietnam and deliciously cool vetiver, found in Haiti. Explaining the charcater of these products, Heirun says they are, ‘Very sophisticated, rounded and clean thanks to aromatic notes of basil and vetiver, perfect for hair care.’ A complete boon for those of us who require a more subtle wake-up than being blasted by grapefruit or  drowning in flowers first thing, they are gentle but effective and leave hair glossy with a ready-to-go bounce.

Inspiring Basil & Vetiver Shampoo £18 for 300ml

Inspiring Basil & Vetiver Conditioner £18 for 300ml

Behind the Scent unboxes our Latest Launches…

Behind the Scent is a blog and YouTube channel run by Kirstie, a ‘perfume enthusiast, candle hoarder and makeup magpie’ from Leicestershire. As soon as we read the intro, in which she states: ‘I have an unhealthy addiction to biscuits, leopard print and black ankle boots. Oh, and if you’re going to the bar, mine’s a Gin & Tonic,’ we just knew we’d love her. So when Kirstie kindly filmed herself exploring the many fragrant delightes of our Latest Launches Discovery Box, we were thrilled to be included on her list of perfume launches for spring.
There’s something about watching people ‘unbox’ that leads us to an immediate adding to our ‘must buy’ lust lists, so we get even more exhilarated when lovely bloggers share their excietment over our Discovery Boxes with their audience. The sense of unpretentious sharing and encouraging others to make up their own minds is what we’re all about at The Perfume Society, so settle down with a cup of tea and watch along with us, now…

We think Kirstie does a great job of describing the notes of the fragrances – taken from the helpful postcards you’ll find in our boxes that explain a little of the history of that house, what you should expect to be smelling and some intriguing questions to challenge your emotional reaction to the scents themselves.
What we particularly enjoyed is that Kirstie had some immediate loves, but those she wasn’t so sure of she made a list to come back to later and smell properly on the skin. That’s the joy of trying fragrances in the comfort of your own home, don’t you think? You get to live with the scent and see how it develops on your skin rather than feeling forced in to making a snap decision!
Of the Latest Launches Kirstie tried, her ultimate favourites included Parfum de Marly’s Delina – a ‘tribute to luminous and sensual femininity’ and perfumer Quentin Bisch’s fragrant tribute to the historic concept of King Louis XVth’s ‘Perfumed Court. The delicately blended rhubarb, lychee and rose notes were a standout for her, with the sumptuous freshness perfectly balanced against a sprinkle of powdered elegance.
The second favourite of Kirstie’s fragrances in the box was Annick Goutal’s Tenue de Soirée – a wonderfully contemporary chypre for any age that’s inspired ‘…by the special feeling of a promise that precedes a night in Paris.’ With oodles of iris and an earthy, addictive base of patchouli, it’s gloriously and unashmedly meant to sashay through the night like a cashmere stole caressing your skin.

With nine new perfumes to coo over to your heart’s delight, including a super-generous 10ml of E.Coudray’s not-yet-available Rose Tubéreuse,  a stunning day and night duo from Miller Harris and two extra scented gifts for you to enjoy, which will YOUR favourite fragrances be, do you think? Only one way to find out, so get those senses tingling and unwrap your own Discovery Box right away…

Minnies Boutique – our exclusive Interview with the glam gals from TOWIE as they launch their fragrant treats…

A pink leopard print bus parked on London’s South Bank could only mean one thing: the ladies from TOWIE were in town, and with fragrant pampering on our minds, we strode towards them, determined to find out their favourite smells of all time (something we cannot resist asking everyone we meet – so psychologically revealing!)
Sam, Billie, Sue and Libby are perhaps best known from starring in the hit TV series The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE to those in the know) and, it turns out, are never ones to rest on their laurels. Having banded together to launch their highly successful eponymous fashion and accessories boutique, based in Essex, their passion for pampering propelled them onto a whole new path…
Having just launched the Minnies Boutique range of beauty products, they urge you to spoil yourself with the fun and flirty collection – from fragrance filled bath bombs to luxurious moisturiser, a scented body spray , luscious body powders and ultra-glam finishing touches such as faux lashes and false nails – Minnies Boutique promise to have your whole  pre-party routine covered.

During our exclusive interview (watch the video, above!) we certainly got to know more about their fragrant tastes – and you can, too, by trying the shimmering treat in our Modern Classics Discovery Box

Modern Muses pucker up with Estee Lauder's lip-smackingly good offer….

Modern Muse by Estée Lauder has sought to scent your every mood – from everyday confidence, daring sophistication, flirtatious moments and nighttime glamour – there’s now a whole wardrobe of what we like to call ‘backbone in a bottle’. Something you can spritz on for an instant ambience-lift or complete change of pace – such is the magic of perfume (and one of the many reasons we love it so!)
At the moment, there’s an even more pressing reason to discover which Muse you are – read on for details of the great offer at The Perfume Shop

The original: Modern Muse – ‘Be an inspiration. Experience the fragrance that captures your style, your confidence, your creative spirit. An alluring contrast of sparkling florals and sleek, sensual woods. It’s a true innovation in fragrance design, as complex and fascinating as the woman who inspires it.’

The seducer: Modern Muse Le Rouge Gloss – ‘Shine on. Be an inspiration. A deeply seductive contrast of two accords as sexy-hot and high-shine as gloss. Succulent fruits, flowers, a hint of spice and a sensual, fearless edge of supple leather with dark woods.’

The mystery: Modern Muse NUIT – ‘A daring and addictive rum accord features amidst a plume of rich Jasmine Absolute for a bold and modern take on seductive femininity. Notes of precious Amber and sensuous Musk enhance the luxury allure of this unforgettable scent.’
The extrovert: Modern Muse Le Rouge – ‘Experience the fragrance that captures your glamour, your sophistication, your bravado. A sexy, provocative contrast of two distinctively different accords – rich roses awakened by ripe fruits, with a seductive velvet creme accord – provide an intriguing dual impression.’
To celebrate Valentine’s Day and romance that reaches beyond, there’s an even better reason to reach for Modern Muse, as customers in-store at The Perfume Shop can take away a FREE full size Estée Lauder Liquid Lip Potion with any Modern Muse purchase of 50ml or above. What’s more, you can choose between two shades: the cherry red “Naughty Naive” for a flirtatiously elegant look and the deeper crimson of “Quiet Riot” for an altogether more seductive feel.
The offer is available in-store at The Perfume Shop, from now until March 26th.
Now then, who will you be inviting to get a little closer to sniff your neck and perhaps, while they’re there, admire your perfect pout…?

Terre de Lumière – feel the warmth of "the golden hour" as we take a sneak-peek at L'OCCITANE's new fragrance…

Dappled sunlight dipping low, skin still warm, running through corn fields in a crisp, white gown as the sun sets… ah, how the dreary days of January make us yearn for such simple pleasures. Even going outside without a coat and brolly right now would be a luxury! But fear not, for L’OCCITANE have bottled the sunshine from that ethereal, other-worldly time of day often termed “the Golden Hour“, and infused the glow into their new fragrance (to be launched in February): Terre de Lumière
L’OCCITANE say: ‘As the day draws to a close, the sky is set alight, embracing all the shades of gold. Beauty is suspended in time and this stunning spectacle reaches its height. Light infuses the ingredients in this fragrance, enhancing them in a rich, faceted creation that evokes the intense sensoriality of a walk through the fields of Provence at the Golden Hour.’
Sunset
Oh yes, take us there now, please…!
We were lucky enough to be present at the press launch of this perfume, and so excited to discover this will be the very first gourmand fragrance for the brand. We predict gourmand as a genre will be huge news once again in 2017 – the comforting, deliciously food-inspired fragrance family seems only natural to turn to in times of uncertainty – and far from the 90s scent bombs that truly began this trend, gourmand has taken a fresh turn of sophistication and wearability – for men and women alike.
Terre de Lumiere
Top Notes: bergamot, ambrette seed, pink pepper
Heart Notes: lavender, honey
Base Notes: acacia flower, bitter almond essence, tonka bean, white musk
Renowned perfumer Calice Becker was chosen for Terre de Lumière, closely collaborating with Shyamala Maisondieu and Nadège Le Garlantezec; Calice explains how the talented trio worked on the fragrance so that it ‘…plays on the tension between masculine freshness and delicious feminine softness. It’s a very innovative scent, the first gourmand aromatic fragrance from L’OCCITANE, absolutely addictive.’ Talking about the inspiration for composing the scent, Calice describes the Golden Hour as the time ‘…when the light is at its most beautiful. It is also when scents are at their height.’
Perfumers
And so what does it smell like? Well, close your eyes, imagine the setting sun still warm on your skin (move closer to the fire or add another layer of clothing, if necessary!) and let us take you to the glowing fields of Provence…

Aromatically zesty from the first spritz, there’s almost a sigh of delight as the fizz of bergamot and pink pepper suddenly melts into the true heart of honey infused with lavender and balanced by the milky freshness of acacia blossoms, the almond-like nuttiness of tonka beans and the balsamic warmth of the earthier base. Perfectly evoking that moment when the day slips impercitibly to dusk, it’s the sensation of contemplative contentment while sitting on a hay bale, having romped barefoot in flower meadows and paddled in cool streams. Deliciously revivifying and fragrantly soothing all at once, we bet you can’t wait to try it…
…And on that note, we suggest [*wink wink*] that you keep your eyes peeled for an exciting announcement, for you could be one of the first people to Discover Terre de Lumière with us. [*hint hint*]

Do you suppose your 'toeses' could be 'posies of rosies'…? It's a tongue-twister come true with Margaret Dabbs wild rose scented polishes (and we want them ALL!)

As children, we used to endlessly repeat tongue-twisters, one of our favourite (of course it would be flower themed) being:

“Moses supposes his toeses are roses,
but Moses supposes erroneously;
for nobody’s toeses are posies of roses,
as Moses supposes his toeses to be…”

We’re not sure from whence the rhyme originally sprang, but it was clearly from the mind of a scented beauty visionary, for now your ‘toeses’ can indeed be ‘posies of roses’. Or, well, at least they can smell like roses while being painted in an array of sumptuous nail polish shades, in a veritable bouquet (over seventy in the collection, so it’s a BIG bouquet) of rose-scented, floral-themed colours and names, by the hands-down Queen of ‘Fabulous Hands’ (and feet), Margaret Dabbs.
Margaret Dabbs says: ‘Themed around the names of English flowers, the 72 beautiful shades of polish take inspiration from the wonders of nature. The soft, light pastel tones of spring-time jasmine and apricot blossom contrast delightfully with the classic, rich winter-time reds of crimson rose and poinsettia. Vibrant summer shades such as fuchsia and gerbera daisy give the range a vivid diversity of colour, which will guarantee the perfect finish to your manicure.’
Screen Shot 2016-05-25 at 16.20.56
Using a unique formula personally created by Margaret ‘to promote nail health and vitality’, vitamin E strengthen and protects the nail bed, with wild rose botanical extract not merely there to smell pretty – it reduces inflammation, helps prevent infections and (the best bit, for us) leaves the oppulent, lasting scent of wild roses on the nails long after the polish is dry. Free from potentially harmful indredients such as formaldehyde, toluene or DPB, Margaret assures the formula is so good for your nails that they’ll remain healthy – even after removing the varnish.
As you know, we’re always ready to get our noses into products that use scent in a unique way, and this summer we predict many a beach, garden or pool-side will witness scenes of people sniffing their manicures (and pedicures, if they’re flexible enough!) Instead of supposing they have heatstroke and need to be taken indoors for a glass of water and a nice lie down – now you know they’ll simply be enjoying the scent of wild roses (on their toeses)…
