Marc-Antoine Barrois, a French couturier turned perfume-house founder, has crafted a fragrance brand seamlessly blending haute couture sensibilities with olfactory fantasy.

Barrois’s journey into the world of scent began a decade after launching his haute couture line, marking a natural progression from dressing the body to adorning it with captivatingly artistic aromas. At the heart of Marc-Antoine Barrois’s fragrance collection lies a profound collaboration with perfumer Quentin Bisch. Their creative synergy, which began in 2016, has given birth to not only a collection of fragrances, each bearing a distinctive and memorable signature, but a deep and lasting friendship. This partnership mirrors the intricate relationship between a couturier and their atelier, where ideas are exchanged, refined, and brought to life with meticulous attention to detail.
Barrois’s approach to fragrance is deeply rooted in his background as a clothing designer. Just as he carefully selects fabrics and finishes for his garments, he applies the same level of thoughtfulness to his scents. And he had quite the apprenticeship, as he explains, having ‘…discovered Haute Couture while working for two years alongside Dominique Sirop, who had himself worked with Monsieur Saint Laurent, and above all for years with Hubert de Givenchy. Continuing his training at Hermès with Jean-Paul Gaultier, then at Jitrois, ‘where I designed for men for the first time. In 2009, at the age of 25, I decided to create my own men’s fashion house, with the aim of rediscovering the traditional fundamentals of Haute Couture: service, quality, and creativity.’ His love for unusual finishes in clothing, such as hidden leather finishing on the inside of pockets, translates into the complex, multi-layered nature of the fragrances. These scents offer wearers a unique textural experience, revealing hidden facets as they develop on the skin, much like the secret details in his couture pieces.
The inspiration behind Marc-Antoine Barrois’ fragrances often draws from the realm of fantasy and childhood wonder. His love of books infuses a sense of whimsy and imagination into the inspirations of the resulting olfactory creations, particularly Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved book “The Little Prince.” This influence is evident in fragrances like B683, which is named after the asteroid of the Little Prince and Barrois’s birth date. The fragrance blends leather and spice notes, inviting wearers to explore an imaginary planet where bespoke pieces, collections, and accessories meet in a symbiosis of poetry and dream.
A more realistic fantasy still infuses fragrances like TILIA, which although is named after an imaginary star, evokes the scent of endless summers, countryside picnics, and the gentle breeze carrying the scent of sun-dried laundry in a meadow. Capturing the essence of ‘perpetual summer’ via notes of honeyed apricot, heliotrope, and jasmine sambac, underscored by the earthy smoke of vetiver, it exemplifies Bisch’s ability to weave Barrois’ playful narratives through scent, transporting the wearer to idyllic or completely imagined landscapes – and even whole new worlds.
The Marc-Antoine Barrois fragrance line is characterised by a play on contrasts, mirroring the interplay of textures and materials in his couture creations. Each scent is designed to respond to and complement the others in the collection, creating a harmonious olfactory wardrobe. The brand’s meticulous aesthetic is further reflected in its presentation – we find fragrances housed in elegant, minimalist bottles that echo the clean lines and sophisticated simplicity of Barrois’s fashion designs. What’s more Barrois has a true respect for nature and minimising environmental impact, and this ethos also links his designs and the fragrance house.
Having made fundamental ecologically sustainable changes to his personal life, at work, Barrois ‘started to emphasise that my creations are sewn in Paris with fabrics that haven’t crossed the planet,’ and in the fragrances, ‘Everything was already manufactured locally, from the packaging to the filling, but there were still many areas for improvement’ he admits. ‘We began by including in the specifications for our new fragrance that it would be stable without preservatives or UV filters, the former all being considered likely endocrine disruptors. Ganymede then successfully passed all crash tests without these additives, and we launched the process of reformulating B683 to remove these same preservatives usually added systematically. It was now 2019, and I felt like a pioneer in respectful perfumery.’ The attention to detail extends to every aspect of the brand, we’ve learned, from the packaging to the in-store experience. And on that note…

In exciting news for their fragrant fans, in 2022 Marc-Antoine Barrois opened a flagship boutique in London’s prestigious Piccadilly Arcade, bringing his unique olfactory creations closer to a wider audience. This expansion marked an important milestone for the house, allowing more people to experience the artistry and imagination behind these exceptional fragrances, in their very own olfactory atelier, where a huge upside-down blue bunny playfully greets passers-by, and a secret miniature dollhouse allows boutique visitors an Alice in Wonderland experience to peep at his perfumed world.
Marc-Antoine Barrois fragrances offer a unique olfactory journey, one that combines the precision and artistry of haute couture with the emotive power of scent. Each fragrance tells a story, inviting the wearer to explore new worlds and rediscover cherished memories, all while wrapped in an aura of sophisticated elegance we know you’re going to want to explore…
