As the first ever group to win The X Factor in 2011, Little Mix are used to breaking records as well as making them; and whatever your opinions are of ‘manufactured’ bands put together for various television talent shows, there is no doubt they’ve proved their staying power – building a loyal fan base and continuing to grow their audience in an over-populated and notoriously unforgiving market.
Striding confidently onto the stage of London’s Drury Lane nightclub, Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jesy Nelson were here to launch a foray into the world of fragrance, chattering excitedly about their ‘dream come true’ as they revealed that when they won The X Factor, they had sat down and written a list of things their hopeful musical success would allow them to do.
‘Having our own perfume was at the top of that list, for us. I mean, what girl wouldn’t love that? We’ve always been interested in perfumes and to have something that’s ours alone is out of this world, we can’t quite believe it’s come true!’
Speaking about some of the other plans on that list, Jesy said they also ‘…really want to do a film together. Something where we get to act but that’s really fun, too. We have so many ideas!’
Asked about how they’d wanted a perfume representing them to smell, and the complexity of working on something that pleased them all equally – they definitely agreed on how they wanted it to make people feel while wearing it; chiming in one by one: ‘..confident, sassy, clean, sophisticated!’
The name of the fragrance was revealed to be Gold Magic, with the notes described as: ‘Opening with a burst of playful hints of fruit, the captivating powdery velvet heart, pretty violet tones and more aqueous watermelon are both refreshing and sophisticated. The base is musky and warm but also sweet and hypnotic.’
Older readers betting they know what it smells like before actually sniffing may well be pleasantly surprised – we found a slight tartness of lemon meringue that balanced the sweetness very well, and could indeed see a swell of scent fans joining the musical clamour of their existing followers.
The sheer enthusiasm and down-to-earth sweetness of the girls certainly won over any cynics in the crowded room of the press launch, and they proved they can sing live by performing some of their greatest hits and their new single, Black Magic, to a genuinely enthusiastic response.
