Nicki Minaj – born Onika Tanya Maraj – is a pop phenomenon, a rapper, singer, songwriter and actress – and a ‘living doll’ who likes nothing more than to dress herself in outrageous couture outfits and extravagant wigs, and dance and sing her heart out.
She became the first female solo artist to have seven singles simultaneously charting on the Billboard Hot 100. By 2013, Nicki Ninaj had sold over 5 million albums globally, and also served as a judge on the must-watch show American Idol. She has countless awards under her seriously bling, custom-made belt – but her debut fragrance Pink Friday, captured in what is surely one of the most outstandingly creative bottles of all time, not only thrilled her legions of fans but introduced Nicki Minaj to a whole new audience.
What makes it different? Each bottle’s sculpted like a doll (just remove the pink-wigged head, to spray!). For the exclusive Selfridges launch, Nicki Minaj took that one stage further, creating limited edition Couture by Minaj outfits to dress up the bottle – which you can see in the fragrance ad. here, each based on outfits Minaj herself has worn. (The result? Queues of fans – which she collectively describes as ‘Barbz’ – virtually around the block.)
In a TV interview to mark the launch, Nicki Minaj says: ‘I had to step outside of me, to create the fragrance. I wanted something universal that everyone could love, enjoy and appreciate.’ As for the unique bottle, ‘it’s everything I envisioned and more – the people who designed this deserve an award. I sat down at the first meeting and they asked me, “What do you want your bottle to look like?” And I said, “Wouldn’t it be crazy if we could have a pink wig…?” And to my surprise, they said: “We could try try that”. I nearly fell out of my chair. And they came up with some designs: one with pink hair, one with a gold face. So I asked: “Could we take the gold face and put it with the pink hair…?” And it was like Christmas for me, seeing this bottle: I felt “someone gets me, finally.”‘
She was, Nicki Minaj explains, ‘involved with every aspect of the decision-making process – it seems easy because I always get this feeling inside: I know if something is right or wrong. Each detail needs to “wow” me or it is not an option; that’s my way of composing perfection.’ She describes it as smelling like ‘angels playing’, with its fusion of boysenberry, lotus flower, Italian mandarin, starfruit and vanilla.
The phenomenal success of Pink Friday – which in 2013 was nominated for three Fragrance Foundation FiFi Awards for Fragrance of the Year, Best Packaging and Media Campaign of the Year – has been followed by Minajesty, a va-va-voom fruity-floral, a swirl of red berries, citrus fruits, flowers (magnolia, orchid, frangipani), on a sexy base of tonka bean, vanilla, musk. As for her debut scent, the bottle’s quite a a show-stopper.
To quote Nicki Minaj‘s interview with the US entertainment channel E!, ‘It has hints of vanilla, woods, lemon, flowers – basically, everything great that God ever created! God is in that bottle; if you want to be blessed, spray it on three times a day! No lie, I go through a bottle a week. You know what’s weird? It makes me feel happy. Do you ever feel like that, like a smell could make you feel euphoric..? I love it, and the bottle obviously has the iconic pink wig, and she’s fierce – and her name is Minajesty.’

As for Nicki Minaj‘s fragrance secrets? ‘Right after the shower, I apply spray perfume all over. When I put on clothes, I spray it all over again.’ But, she advises, ‘Don’t wear something because you think someone else likes it. Fragrance should make you feel happy…’
Always a force to be reckoned with, Nicki Minaj is now a powerful name in fragrance. We’re watching and waiting for her next outrageous move…
