Craving salad? Try these VEGETABLE-based scents!

There comes a time – after the great gluttony that festive celebrations be – when one begins to crave salad. The verdant crunch of a lettuce leaf, the peppery bite of a radish, or luscious vibrancy of a vine-ripened tomato suddenly prove irresistible after mountains of sweetness and stodge. The same is true of scents, we find – from the spices and snuggle-me-closer warm woodiness we now want some FRESHNESS and something new to smell! Luckily, there are now some fragrances utilising innovative new vegetable extracts (yes, you read that right), and no, you wont actually smell like a salad bowl, don’t worry.

Yes indeed, there’s been a veritable glut of vegetable notes cropping up in perfumes lately, from beetroots and carrots through to artichokes and even cauliflowers in this brand new gourmand category of scents. If you’ve over-indulged on rich food, consider a salad, and (far more enjoyable) getting your greens in fragrant form.

‘The French Garden’ is a new collection of six fragrances from L’Officine Universelle Buly that garland vegetable notes with flowers and musks, all giving off a morning dew freshness. The launch happily coincided with the publication of our own garden themed edition of the magazine in 2023, The Perfumer’s Garden – because really, ever since the pandemic, it has all been about how much we get from our gardens and green spaces we can access for our mental health; how they inspire us all.

‘A garden is like a perfect universe,’ agrees Buly’s co-founder, Victoire de Taillac (pictured in her own garden, below). ‘A paradise. A haven… Gardening means being outside in all weathers, with all your sense awakened. The smells come together and surprise you…’ Also taking the senses by surprise are combinations like Indian Cucumber and Syrian mint, offering ‘crazy minty joy’, in a cloak of musk, and Iraqi Beetroot and Egyptian Rhubarb, tethered to the earthiness of patchouli. Or enjoy that note du jour, geranium, adding an extra dash of green to Watercress & Sardinian Parsley.

Some of the notes (like rhubarb, carrot and cucumber) have been used for many years by noses in their creations, while others seem more peculiar at first: sweet potato? It seemed incongruous, but oh it works amazingly well! They all do, having been expertly blended to achieve an almost photo-realistic encounter at first sniff, which then melds with your skin to become the fine fragrances they truly are. Basically put, no matter which you plump for, we promise you will NOT end up smelling like a soup or bowl of salad!

The project began when Buly co-founder Ramdane Touhami bid on an antique seed box in an auction. Having won it, he wondered if these precious seeds collected over hundreds of years could still be planted. Sadly that experiment didn’t flourish, but it did plant the seed of an idea: what if their next fragrances could reflect the love we all had for our gardens and green spaces during lockdown? A scented escapism in every spritz?

“Les Jardins Français” brings back to life an intoxicating and unique palette of garden fragrances. They all seem to be seized by the morning dew during a morning stroll through the vegetable garden and orchard, between rows of plants coming from the farthest ends of the world, acclimatised since Antiquity by patient monks, meticulous collectors and erudite healers, all genius gardeners and gatherers. Like a miraculous harvest in a universal garden, with freshly raked paths adorned with rare flowers, these armfuls of familiar vegetables and simple herbs, these aromatic and sunny delicious bouquets delight the senses and the heart.

Les Jardin Français is available online at www.buly1803.com and at their Selfridges counter: £145 for 75ml. La Sizaine collection of six x 9ml travel perfumes is also available for £108. The perfect way to sample the while collection (because you will need to smell them all!)

Since the launch of the fragrances, there’s been another crop of newness with Savon Superfin soaps and the divinely moisturising Lait Virginal to complement. One thing’s for certain – this growing L’Officine Buly Les Jardins Français collection is un-beet-able. [Apologies]

Leaps in technology have given perfumers access to new aroma molecules, which for the first time allow natural extracts of vegetable notes to be used in perfumery. To read even more about this remarkable vegetable revolution in the perfume world, take a look at the Spray Your Five a Day feature, which appeared in the late summer issue of The Scented Letter magazine; but meanwhile we urge you to also seek out some other examples of this bumper crop as your New Year’s scent resolution…

Scenting the Winter Solstice

Marking the rebirth of the sun, and a renewal of hope and lighter days ahead, the Winter Solstice has enthralled cultures around the world for many centuries. That gradual waning of daylight hours – which, oh golly, has felt eternal and gloom-laden – is reversed, and in religious ceremonies, in the alignment of ancient monuments, and in households eager to fling back the curtains, we gratefully welcome the light again.

It takes time, of course, for us to notice the incremental extra minutes, then hours, that we can look to the sky and feel hopeful again; but there are things that can help. A brisk walk in whatever nature you can access (even twice around the block when you’re in a funk) can shake off some of the frosted cobwebs; and a generous spritz of a scent that has somehow captured the midwinter sunshine and magnified it – a perfumed prism of happiness, if you like – is fantastic for an instant uplift. These aren’t the balmy, beachy scents of summer, which can feel a little brash and jolting right now; but the gentle winter sunshine contained within can add a sparkle and genuinely can help boost your mood.

Until the sun feels like it’s in the right place again, please consider seeking these out to help you feel a bit lighter of spirit….

Pep Up Your Perfumes! Black & Pink Pepper Scents

It’s definitely the time of year we need a pep to our perfumes, and thankfully many scents showcase pepper – of the black and pink varieties (though chilli and other types are increasingly being used). Pepper pairs so well and enhances many ingredients, just as the spice does in cooking, so are often used as a type of ‘scented seasoning’ within a fragrance formula. However, as you will see, pepper can radiate wonderfully when allowed to shine as a more dominant ingredient, too.

You can read our Ingredient pages for the more about the fascinating history and uses of both black pepper, and pink pepper; but meanwhile, we urge you to seek out these spice-sprinkled scents and add an olfactory tingle to get you through colder days…

Glorious Ginger

Ginger fragrances are definitely having a moment – perhaps we’re simply gravitating toward them more at this time of the year, for their warming spiciness? But ginger can do far more than add a tingle to scent: there’s the juiciness of freshly sliced ginger root for adding an almost aqueous touch to a composition, too.

Many of us are familiar with the beige-skinned, yellow-fleshed fresh spice, which adds pungency to cooking – as the Romans, who first imported it, discovered. Those same roots we love to spice up our food with – rhizomes, to use the perfume world’s word for them – can be steam-distilled to produce this useful scented oil.

Ginger can be variously bracing, uplifting and almost nose-tinglingly spicy, depending on the type (and how much) a perfumer chooses for their formula. And ginger can be very versatile – it pairs beautifully with vanilla, woody notes and citrus, for example; as well as white flowers like jasmine and sunlight-filled neroli. This spice is used quite widely in perfumery – as well as a wide range of foods and medicines, too, produced everywhere from South America to Malaysia, the Caribbean, Japan and Africa.

With many people now enjoying ginger ‘shots’ for a bracing morning drink – using it to clear the cobwebs and ward-off colds – we’re suggesting you seek out these gloriously ginger-spiced scents for a more fragrantly lasting (and just as soul-reviving) boost…

When this launched as an eau de parfum, it became a best-seller, setting many hearts aflame. Now the latest to be intensified as an extrait, the orange blossom is a new, buxomly formidable accord developed by Sarah, with caramelised zest and ginger’s zing . A car chase through tuberose fields on fire, she says. Oh MY! Fan me.

Creative Ways to Festively Fragrance Home, Gifts & Guests!

Of COURSE we are lighting candles and putting out the most beautiful diffusers from our curated Home Scents selections, but when the festive season really gets going (and to be honest, at any time of year), we’re always looking for news ways to scent every corner of our lives.

As fellow fragrance-lovers, we know you will understand the thrill of digging through your stash of perfume samples (as you can imagine, we have rather a number kicking about at any one time!) and finding something we’d forgotten about, or hadn’t gotten around to trying yet. May we urge you to do that right now – rifle the boxes and tins and drawers of various samples you’ve collected from our amazing Discovery Boxes, and let’s get to using some of them in even more creative ways: to scent our surroundings for Christmas…

3 Unglazed Ceramic Hearts £4.30 hobbycraft.co.uk

Consider purchasing a few ceramic shapes (you can get them from art / hobby shops, or online) and spritzing them with something soothing to hang around the house – even on your Christmas tree! We most love hanging them over the end of a radiator to ensure a continuous subtle scent diffusion for every room. And you can change-up the scent whenever you wish, all year ’round!

P.S: A great little stocking gift for friends if packed in a pretty box with a few scent samples, and a little note saying why you chose those perfumes for them.

Scented Table Settings

If you have several candles on the dinner table, having them all be scented can be a little overwhelming during a meal. However, how about using some naturally fragrant foliage and additions to a central table display? Buy an extra jar of cinnamon sticks and twist some florist’s wire around them to pop in a swag, add sprigs of rosemary atop napkins, and even think about spritzing the table cloth with a seasonal scent! (Be sure to check if it will mark the fabric, though, beforehand by spraying on a tissue).

Perfumed Presents

Grab some samples of scents that perhaps weren’t for you or you want to use up, and spray tissue paper (from a distance, so you don’t mark it). It adds an extra-special touch to a gift bag or box, and you could even add the sample to the gift as well!  Who knows, it could be that your gift recipient will fall madly in love with it and thank you forever. And everyone appreciates those finishing touches that shows you’ve made an effort (and this one is so easy). You can also scent wrapping paper and ribbons, or tie aromatic herb sprigs to gift tags.

Make & Fill Your Own Cracker Kit £9.82 thecrackercompany.co.uk

An excellent idea at using up some of your extra fragrance samples or minis is to make your own Christmas crackers. (These also make really gorgeous gifts, which you could personalise, and are SO much more welcome – and far more affordable – than some of the plastic tat shop-purchased ones can be.) Who wouldn’t rather have a beautiful little perfume in a cracker than yet another unusable mini nail file or teeny screwdriver?! There’s lots of patterns and designs for every occasion on this website, because scent crackers aren’t just for Christmas!

With all these fragrant ideas for scenting your home and gifts this Christmas, make sure you don’t run out of samples (or choose specific ones if making themed crackers for guests) by browsing our always-expanding selection of Perfume Society Curated Discovery Boxes, and the stunning collection of Brand Boxes (featuring new, niche and beloved designer names). And however you choose to use them – we know you, your home, and your guests will be smelling amazing this season!

Cool Spice: Cardamom Scents We Covet

Cardamom’s been spicing up perfumery at least since Egyptian times, and was one of the key fragrance plants used in Greek perfumes. With it’s cool, aromatic, head-clearing scent, we’re still loving it to this day. And here, in our continuing series of blog posts exploring the spices used in fragrance and especially beloved at this time of year; we’re taking a look at some of our favourites…

Cardamom is costly to use in perfumery – the third most expensive spice for scent usage in the world (after vanilla and saffron) – but so aromatic that only a touch is needed of the essential oil that’s steam-distilled from the seeds of the Elletaria cardomomum plant. Widely used in cooking, too, in south-east Asia – and perhaps most famously, to flavour chai – its slightly camphorous properties work to freshen breath.

In fact, there are two varieties of cardamom: earthy, smoky black cardamom – and the fresher, almost minty, eucalyptus-y green cardamom. The first works perfectly in more exotic, Ambrée blends – making for something that’s almost skin-like, or suede-soft – while the aromatic green cardamom adds brightness.

Back in our thirty eighth edition of The Scented Letter Magazine – the summer Solar Flair issue, which you might like to dreamily thumb your way through these chilly days!  – we followed fragrance-lover and author Neil Chapman‘s travels via his journey through fragrant spices. And he spoke so beautifully about cardamom, I wanted to include this snippet here. Neil wrote that…

‘At a plantation I near Bandung in Indonesia, as I was led through the fields I suddenly realised that like most people, I had no idea where the spices we use actually come from: cinnamon from the inner bark of the tree; saffron from the stamens plucked from inside crocus flowers; cloves from the dried buds of flowers; and cardamom from the seed pods of a plant that grows close to the ground in nut-like clusters.

It was fascinating to see this being cultivated up close, not least because cardamom is the most refreshing of spices and the one I use the most: green, almost citric. I never drink tea without it; the essential oil is also astonishingly head-clearing; in the bath, within minutes you feel mental cobwebs being zapped away.

In perfumes, cardamom oil is also used in introductions–such as Cartier’s woody-spicy Déclaration (1998) – for its brightness, if rarely as the main protagonist. Exceptions include the lovely Cardamusc by Hermès (2018), a clear, aldehydic musk as pure as angels that begins with an introit of sheer, singing cardamom: I find this enjoyable to use at night before bed, like an immaculate corridor of white.’

So, be it cool, head-clearing, aromatically versatile or even drifting to incense and toward a chai tea aspect – which of these cardamom-infused scents would you like to try first?

Memoize London Vita
