Fabulous Floral Street! The affordable niche house shaking the petals of the perfume world

When we first encountered Floral Street, suffice to say we were blown away by their concept – and oh boy did they deliver in the execution of the fabulous new spins on floral fragrances, and within their standalone Covent Garden store.

Our co-founder, Jo Fairley, has known Michelle Feeney for longer than either of them care to admit – back to Michelle’s time at the Estée Lauder Companies, and then at the helm of revolutionary tanning name St Tropez. So when she announced she was unveiling a fragrance line ‘built on the streets of London’, we were rather thrilled by the whole idea and the stunning reality…

Floral Street’s fragrances are as far from your granny’s florals as it’s possible to get – each created by the star perfumer Jérôme Épinette, who is known for his mastery of natural ingredients. As Floral Street put it: ‘These are bunches – not bouquets. Ingredients, not notes. And it’s about ease, modernity and joy.’ Michelle adds: ‘My mission is to bring fine fragrance to the modern female – so that she might build an entire fragrance wardrobe, which can express the many facets of who she is.’

At the heart of each fragrance is a specific flower (sourced by the legendary fragrance house Robertet) – but each creation brings an unexpected twist,   treated in a way that brilliantly ignites the senses. Take Wonderland Peony, which not only features armfuls of that flower, but pink berries and violets, Anything but cutesy, it’s given a woody-balsamic warmth by cedarwood, alongside vetiver.

London Poppy is ‘a love letter’ to the capital city, ‘a city that sees the sun through the crowds’. Bright as a sun-filled London morning, it bursts into life with Florida orange and Sicilian lemon, a marine note adding a splash of seaspray to the neroli, jasmine sambac and apricot blossom at London Poppy’s heart, before the base of hinoki woods, black amber and cedarwood ventures forth.

The fragrance which has scent critics and beauty editors most excited, perhaps, is Chypre Sublime: an utterly modern take on this sophisticated fragrance family, blending incense with Damask rose absolute, midnight violet, pink pepper and geranium, on a stunning base of benzoin, labdanum and olibanum which – as Floral Street nails it – ‘offers a resin-soaked wood table for the flowers to perch on. A fragrance for musicians, painters and poets.’

Perfumistas have recently been gravitating toward the daringly delicious Ylang Ylang Espresso: A strikingly modern and supremely wearable blend of red rose, ylang ylang and jasmine resting atop a soothing cloud of just-brewed coffee, fresh cream and Sichuan pepper – sustainably harvested from the foothills of the Himalayas. ‘A fragrance to get lost in’ they say, and oh how we love to do just that.

What’s more, all the packaging is recylable and sustainable, and the boxes have been cleverly designed to be used as seed trays, instead of being thrown away! You can read more about the ethos behind the brand on our page dedicated to Floral Street.

We could wax-lyrical about the entire collection, but the very best way is for you to try these exciting new ways to wear floral on your own skin (or to give as the perfect gifting experience). With that in mind, we’re so happy to be stocking the Floral Street Discovery Set, where you can try all 8 fragrance for just £14!

Latest Launches: Seasonal Delights!

We thought our wishlist was complete until we discovered these five new perfume launches. With fabulous bottles and irresistible names (White Moss and Snowdrop, anyone?) we’ll be swishing our Angela Flanders Taffeta and embracing this seasonal selection of delights.

ACQUA DI PARMA
COLONIA x CLYM EVERNDEN
Acqua di Parma’s utterly classic, quintessential Cologne gets all dressed up for Christmas – as do their Christmas gifts (see p.23 of The Scented Letter) – in this Colonia Artist Edition, wittily decorated by award-winning artist and art director Clym Evernden. (Do check out his Instagram @clymdraws). A timeless classic, equally at home on a woman’s skin as a man’s, this positively sparkles with lavender, verbena and Damask rose, offering a final embrace of vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli.
£151 for 180ml eau de Cologne
acquadiparma.com

ANGELA FLANDERS
TAFFETA
Capturing that time when dusk falls, Taffeta embodies mysterious light, chilled air, the senses alive with possibility. Dewy hyacinth is speckled with the hushed rasp of peppery lavender, adding a dry rustle to the beautifully powdered iris and lipstick rose in the heart. Smoky tendrils of vetiver flicker between the shadows and surprising freshness of the base – a juxtaposition that invites and beguiles while evoking the elusive, colour-changing quality of the fabric it’s inspired by.
£69 for 30ml eau de parfum

ETRO
MUSK
Spritz Etro Musk on a woman’s neck. Do the same on a man’s. Whoever wears this latest creation from the jet-set’s favourite boho-chic fashion label, the result is wonderfully nuzzleable, simply enhancing the natural scent of warm skin as only a contemporary musk can really do. Bergamot, grapefruit, verbena, cedar, guaiac and Indian sandalwood also feature, technically – but it’s the musk that delivers the come-hither softness. Not so much unisex as uni-sexy, we’d say.
From £64.80 for 50ml eau de toilette

JO MALONE LONDON
WHITE MOSS & SNOWDROP
We have our fingers crossed that this seasonal creation stays firmly put. It’s a reminder of the extraordinary cleverness of perfumers, who can play with molecules to recreate sensations of warm and cool – at first, almost as cold as an Arctic blizzard, its forest mossiness emerges from the snow to be gradually warmed by touches of golden amber and cardamom. The bottle’s a stunner, meanwhile – catching the light, the glass appears cloaked in a rainbow.
£96 for 100ml Cologne

LACOSTE
L’HOMME INTENSE
Jolly stylish bottle. Jolly stylish scent. This intensified version of L’Homme Lacoste – more tenacious, more bold – ramps up the power of the original. Fresh mandarin and orange fizz alongside rhubarb and quince, while the heart is a spicy swirl of black pepper and ginger. Cedarwood and akigalawood, amber, vanilla, cypriol and vetiver make for a sensual conclusion, drizzled with almond, for mellowness. And can you make out the jasmine-laden breeze blowing through the whole creation?
£35 for 50ml eau de toilette

Fish & fragrance?! Sarah Baker Perfumes pops up at Fin & Flounder

It’s quite possibly one of the most unusual Christmas pop-ups we’ve seen, but niche luxury perfume brand Sarah Baker Perfumes is collaborating with Fin & Flounder, the premium fishmonger and oyster bar on Hackney’s fashionable Broadway Market.

On Saturday 8th and 22 December, Sarah Baker Perfumes and Fin & Flounder will be offering the public a Christmas special package deal: a luxury Sarah Baker fragrance of their choice, six oysters and two glasses of champagne for £120 (the fragrances usually sell for £120 on their own, so this represents a bargain for shoppers who like to be lavish!) In addition, the fragrances will be available to purchase separately at £100, and a range of fragrances in handy travel atomisers at £20 – perfectly sized for stocking-stuffers.

[NB: Those of you not already familiar with Sarah Baker can read all about her journey to founding her own niche house in the recent Fashion, Fragrance & Feminism issue of The Scented Letter Magazine, in which she kindly invited us into her studio to gaze in wonder at her fabulous personal fragrance collection (a must-read for fans of ultra-niche scents!) for #ShareMyStash]

While this Christmas collaboration might seem a peculiar one for perfume, it came about when artist and founder Sarah Baker was creating a new image for the launch of her ‘Motif Collection’ in Belgium in November. Baker wanted ‘…to create a campaign image referencing the Flemish traditions of 17th-century still life paintings as an homage to the city.’ In keeping with this tradition of memento mori paintings, she sourced the best quality—and best looking—fish from Fin & Flounder, already being a fan of the fishmonger’s beautiful window displays.

‘After the massively positive response to the image we created in Antwerp, it seemed only fitting to go back to the source and do something with Fin & Flounder since their fish are really such an integral part of what makes the image work,’ explains Baker.

The fishy collab also makes more sense when you know the theme behind her latest release, Atlante, ‘With its sea-breeze fresh combination of notes —yuzu, seaweed and ambergris—inspired by the wild ocean.’ Shoppers visiting Fin & Flounder will be among the first to try this new fragrance. And if you can’t make it own for the next two Saturdays’ full-on boujee fish and fragrance experiences, you’ll be able to buy all the Sarah Baker Perfumes at Fin & Flounder during its usual weekday opening times until 22 December 2018.

Fragonard: the historic French house (with THE cutest miniatures)

Fragonard are one of the most beautiful fragrance houses in France, nestled in the heart of Grasse – itself the home of fine perfumery since the 17th Century. Proudly still in the same family, and currently being run by a trio of sisters who mark the fourth generation, Fragonard are something of a fragrant fixture, and well worth getting to know.

The perfumes themselves are simply divine, and the packaging always exquisite – yet we feel this lovely house can often be overlooked. No More! Here, we are thrilled to bring you not one but TWO boxes to indulge in. For yourself to explore, or as a perfect gift to give if you’re not sure what type of fragrance they prefer? Either way, get ready to be blown away by their outstanding character, quality and affordability…

A trio of darling little miniature-sized perfume bottles, holding three of Fragonard’s iconic fragrances, form the perfect way to wear and fall in love with their utterly charming scents. Wonderful for miniature collectors, travelling or keeping in your bag for on-the-go perfume top ups!

Etoile – inspired by the ladies of Provence, who wore broaches known as ‘stars of Digne’ which were regarded as lucky charms – the sparkling  bergamot, apple and ginger top notes blend to a heart filled with gardenia, lily of the valley and jasmine on a base of amber and cedar wood.

Emilie – a bewitching floral composition that blends sumptuous rose petals and jasmine with a more delicate violet note, then wraps them in sandalwood and amber. A fragrance to treasure, conjuring softly blushing shades of pink and mauve.

Diamant – dazzling mysterious, this leaves a luminous trail with mandarin, orange and pepper as top notes, rose, jasmine and plum in the luscious heart, balanced on a rich background of vanilla, patchouli, ethereal musk and caramel.

Fragonard Set of 3 Miniatures £25 for 2 x 5ml + 1 x 6ml

A stand-out collection of heavenly scents in just THE cutest miniature bottles, we invite you to immerse yourself in these joyful droplets of perfume pleasure, and understand for yourself exactly why this perfume house has become a legend.

Grain De Soleil – an alluring fragrance, delicate rose, subtle iris and intoxicating jasmine enhanced by cinnamon, mellow amber, rich vanilla and exotic incense, Grain de Soleil is a true Ambrée fragrance.

Soleil – a heady blend of flowers – jasmine and orange blossom, lily and rose, iris and wisteria – off-set by amber, sandalwood and musk. An intensely radiant fragrance that irresistibly evokes the noontide southern sun. This is THE great Fragonard classic.

Diamant – a sweet-Ambrée, with mandarin, orange and pepper as top notes, balanced by rose, jasmine and plum as middle notes, on a background of vanilla, patchouli, musk and caramel.

Fragonard – an elegant scent that unites suave white flowers, orange blossom with mellow amber, musk and wood.

Belle De Nuit – a true original, deep rich harmony of flowers and fruit on a warm velvety bottom note of musk. A precious fragrance, as magical as an Arabian night!

CHANEL N°5: cloaked in red for Christmas! See 5 fabulous installations

This season, the iconic glass bottle of CHANEL N°5 donned a fiery cloak of red, and perfume lovers have been going wild collecting their favourite fragrance in this newly hued flacon.

CHANEL say: ‘A symbol of ultimate femininity and synonymous with this festive time of year, the emblematic colour evokes a dynamic sense of confidence, desire and indisputable opulence…’

Now, in celebration of this limited edition, CHANEL focus once again on Mademoiselle’s lucky number, ‘with five breathtaking red fragrance bottles lighting up locations around London in the lead up to Christmas.’ Definitely the most sophisticated take on Christmas lights we’ve ever seen!

‘Beginning with its debut in Berkeley Square on the 14th of November, the five bottles will then intermittently appear on New Bond Street, in Spitalfields and Duke of York Square, before concluding the adventure in Covent Garden.

Designed in 1921 by Mademoiselle Chanel before subtly evolving over the 20th and 21st centuries, the simple, geometric lines of the bottle and facetted stopper are as distinctive as the scent it holds. A model of minimalism and modernity, N°5 stands up to the test of time, adding to its mystery and depth each year.’

They really do have to be seen in person to be fully appreciated – we certainly welcome this sophisticated take on Christmas lights (and, of course, they’re the perfect backdrop for an ultra-stylish seasonal selfie!)

Location dates
14th – 16th Nov: Berkeley Square
16th Nov – 3rd Jan: New Bond Street Boutique
26th Nov – 27th Dec: Spitalfields
3rd – 16th Dec: Duke of York Square
9th – 23rd Dec: Covent Garden

We’ve got a star studded hit parade of new perfumes for you this week and we’re falling in love with all five. ATTRAPE-RÊVES
Resident Vuitton perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud’s latest translates as ‘dreamcatcher’ and it’s certainly captured our heart, with a little help from the most enchanting ad – or should we say adventure? – starring Emma Stone. In this ‘aromatic incarnation of spiritual wonder’, airy and transparent peony – chosen to evoke ‘visions of shooting stars scattered across the velvet night sky’ – contrasts with earthy, dark patchouli, all infused with the juicy sweetness of litchi, in a refillable Marc Newson flacon.

Anne Flipo’s pride at creating a fragrance ‘inspired by Ralph Lauren’s vision of a heroine’ was written all over her at the launch at London’s Allbright Club. Woman’s ‘face’ is Jessica Chastain, Hollywood’s embodiment of strength, its hashtag, #leadlikeawoman. But that most powerful of fragrance notes, tuberose, has been softened in Flipo’s hands, mellowed by cedarwood, patchouli and sandalwood, then captured in a gold-adorned flask.
